They are cute, and no, you aren't supposed to make pets of them. Although this one is as tame as can be - s/he lives under our porch.
You aren't supposed to have pet squirrels or raccoons, either - people do it, though. If it's native to North America, somebody probably has one as a pet, illegal or not.
We don't recommend skunks, though, unless you de-scent them.

I always said to "folk" - signs on shop doors etc "no dogs allowed - unless a guide dog" I want to walk into a shop with a leopard and say - it says dogs not cats
