Crowds of birdwatchers have continued to flock to a quiet cul-de-sac for a second day after a rare sighting of a species perched on a garden washing line.

The report of the scarlet tanager in Shelf, near Halifax, is believed to be the first time one of the birds has been sighted in Yorkshire.

The stocky songbird normally travels between the eastern United States and lowland South American forests twice a year.

One twitcher who made an early morning journey from London described catching a glimpse of the creature as "exhilarating".

Dozens of birdwatchers assembled along the street after initial reports that the bird had been sighted were shared online and on social media.

On Tuesday, the road continued to be packed with crowds pointing cameras and binoculars towards a particular suburban garden.

Oh, wow! It must have been blown off-course!

That's like when the prothonotary warbler (a yellow bird, very cute) showed up in Central Park in NYC a year or two ago...people went crazy.

Birders are...special.

I won't put any links of coursebut the amount of "twitchers" that are there, are from far and wide

One householder is charging 10 pounds for "them" to view from HIS garden

They would be! Of course, that's a beautiful bird. I've never seen one live - I don't know where they hang out but it's not in my neighbourhood.

Alas! Due to many round here, cutting down garden hedges etc and "sticking up" fences etc.
I hardly see ANY sparrows/starlings/blackbirds now

Just the odd few pigeons and "neck ringed" doves

I have bread thrown in the garden and it's there for days

I've hung "monkey nuts" from my shrub and still can't attract the "small birds"

Our bird feeder attracts birds - it has a perch, also space below...but then, we have trees and bushes all around, and they come up on the porch, mostly when we're not there, but sometimes when we are...and there's a suet holder on the porch...

Also in summer, hummingbird feeder...

Apenootjes / Monkey nuts are peanus where I live.

Our neighbours tend to overdo on nuts for the birds, with multiple feeders. The little birds come to our garden anyway because they like the huge shrubbery and its fresh shoots. (plus we do not have a resident cat).

Looking at the BBC news, I wonder how long it will take before we have to start saying 'Y!', formerly known as USA?
