Oops. That was supposed to say.
Convert the BINARY to base 10, then convert the base 10 to letters.
(1001 in binary is 9, which is I.)

Well, now you're just intentionally confusing me.
How does 1001 become 9?

1*8+0*4+0*2+1*1.
8+0+0+1.
9.
That's how.

1001 becomes 1*8+0*4+0*2+1*1 because in binary, each column of numbers is worth twice the one to the right of it, as opposed to ten times as in base 10. So, the first column is worth 1, the second worth 2, the third is 4, the fourth is 8, the fifth is 16, and so on. You can also think of it in terms of 2 raised to a certain power; in that case, the first column is multiplied by 2^0, the second by 2^1, the third by 2^2, the fourth by 2^3, the fifth by 2^4, and so on. See, it's easy.
