DAR = Daughters of the American Revolution. 'Nuff said.

Hypatia Posted Mar 16, 2006
The Daughters of the Republic of Texas are a fun bunch, too. They're the ones who were so indignant when Ozzy Osbourne took a whizz on the Alamo. Not that I approve of that, it was totally uncalled for, but these ladies are hard to agree with.

Hypatia Posted Mar 16, 2006
Not that they do anything controversial. What I'm trying to say is that their superior attitude is hard to stomach.

Leo Posted Mar 16, 2006
Hum. How about forming a Daughters of the Industrial Revolution society? Daughters of Foreign Revolutions?
Xantief, what do you mean by European tradtion?
I'm rather tired of corndogs, but I wont say no to grape juice.

Hypatia Posted Mar 16, 2006
Grape juice? Concord, red or white?
I like corndogs, but agree that we've had enough for a while. And the smores is like mainlining glucose. What to do....what to do....still no sign of a possum....definitely need sustenance for a long evening of campfire tales.
So, city girl, you must have walked past about a hundred delis on your way here and you couldn't have stopped in and brought a little something with you? I could do with a Reuben about now. And some of those extra crunchy kettle chips with the sea salt and vinegar. And a really good cup of coffee.

LeoAlpha,
If bragging gets on your nerves, this will really frost your buns.
I can trace my ancestry back 200,000 years to my great^n-grandma who lived in Africa.

Actually, seems we are distant cousins. Could you put us up when we come to NYC?

Sons of the Luddites? Children of the Potato Famine? Daughters of Steerage Passengers?
I read , while visiting a southern plantation, that the slaves were to valuable to use for clearing swamps and canals because of snakes and malaria so they hired the Irish instead.

Good to know your value.
Hyp, I'm 3 blocks away from Essex on Coney, formost Kosher Deli in the tri-state area. I'll go and get some knishdogs, for a change in fare.
Any other orders? No possum there, I'm afraid.

LeoAlpha,
By 'tradition', I mean the customs, legends, and all the reasons people do the things they do.
Some are weird, some strange, and some are ennobled by their intrinsic rightness.
One UK tradition I can't really figure out, though, is the Orangemen's 'marching season' in Ulster. It generally starts a ruckus.
Maybe they could hold a 'Doo Dah' parade. Traditional California weirdness, where everyone gets to make a point, and enjoy all the other people and their points.
The Doo Dah parade...I was sad to learn that the Synchronized Briefcase Drill Team have disbanded. They used to put on a good show.

Knish= mashed potatoes and onion mix (with granma's secret ingredients) in a dough thing.
In this case, takes the place of a bun.
I was busy during past class.
Apologies to all those who have ever taught.

I see that the most important items have gotten rather oversized... Dear me. I think the possum is well fed enough...

There may be some footage archived somewhere. They were like a military drill team in their precision, and they did things with their briefcases that boggled the mind. They needed mucho practice, and the effort kinda died after a while...I think the newbies didn't like all that work.
Now that was a good snapshot, LA! I reckon I gotta stick a fork in the possum, see if he's done....

good morning, mysterious particles of DNA and something entirely other -
its twenty to seven on this cold, grey yet hopeful new morning ---
---these conversations have woken me up --
you know how sometimes you just wake up and leap out bed and never look back?--- just walk right out into the rest of your life? -- flashing brain lights giving you a fit with their strobe vibrations ---
I have some things to do ... I have to lay down my seven clawed purple Adam print outside Buckingham Palace. have to silverspray those diagrams and question marks and mutant lizard brain pieces of wonder alongside the bloodscars on the walls of the Tower of London. have to go and find Eve and ask her how she dealt with the menopause. have to go and rearrange my DNA in the sauna and wait for summer, when I can sit naked on the shoreline and build castles from shells. I have to see heaven and hell in a grain of sand --and kiss the ghost of William Blake. I have to be haunted and daunted and ageing and raging, and peaceful and interconnected, and now I need breakfast ...
gotta go, I have many things to do -- many things to do --
thankyou for your inspirations
speak to me ancestors ---- pleeeeze graffiti my mutant brain

Are we going to name the possum? I would rather have him for a campfire mascot than eat him. And for someone who doesn't drink beer, Leo, you have supplied a rather large bottle.
I had forgotten about the Doo Dah parade. What a hoot! And I've seen film of the briefcase folks. It was such a clever idea, I'm sorry to hear they have disbanded.
Sure and is everyone wearing the green today? When we lived in San Antonio they used to dye the river green on St. Patrick's Day. I thought that was a wee bit excessive, expecially since it's a Hispanic city. Today I am limiting my celebration to having an Irish coffee this morning and I may fix a bowl of rich Irish potato soup for my supper tonight.
Helen, if I can inspire you to take a look at your own history, then I feel like I've accomplished something by being a member of h2. When I visited England I managed to get one of my English friends to visit the British Museum and the British Library for the first time. That was pretty cool.
Last time I went in the spring and concentrated on gardens. Next time I'm going in the autumn and want to do cathedrals. The only cathedral I managed to work into the schedule was Yorkminster. Think I'll start in the south at Canterbury and work my way north.
I was serious about writing up the trip for the Post. I loved Phred's travelogue of the Southwest. He has inspired me. I spoke to EMR about it and it's a go. So I won't say any more about it here. You'll have to read the articles.

Hey!
I'm also starting a new eight-part mini-series in called "Pilgramage to the Ozarks", which culminates in an explosive climax on July 4th...Part one should be released soon, starring Hypatia, Xantief and other attendees.
I'll be driving a red 1982 4wd Dodge Ram pickup with a defective muffler.
I was afraid that we might become too attached to "Steve" if we fed him corn flakes and Sam Adams at the table for two weeks.
Roadkill may be the answer. I'll keep an eye out for fresh things to pop into the freezer.
Another beer, Steve?
