If you continue to have an excellent record,
there's always graduate school. Unless they
do things difrerently in the U.K. Do they
have graduate schools in U.K.?

Britain has doctors and lawyers, so there must
be somewhere for them to train for their professions.
Oxford even has a business school now, so there must
be MBA's starting to appear in British corporations.
Anyway....

Yes, Uni's in the UK do offer graduate programs... I just don't know what they call them.
Help me out here, some of you UK people - After you graduate from Uni with your degree (what we would call a Bachelor's degree), you can go back later and get what we would call a Master's degree, and yet again to get a Doctorate.
I know this is so because after graduating last summer with a degree in Philosophy, Clive is returning to Uni this fall to pursue his Master's degree, and hopefully sometime later to get his Doctorate. (BTW he graduted with Honors in the First Degree - what we would call Magna Cum Laude! )

Yep- and, funnily enough, if you've done your Bwhatever (ie BA, BSc, BEng etc) and go back for a Masters, you get called a Postgraduate

Yeah, we'd call them post-grads too... doing post-grad work, in post-grad programs.
It seem we must have more terms for it than you do.

Oh, I didn't mean that - although, considering the size differential between the two nations, you'd think we'd have even more... but at the same time, we have such vast areas that are sparsely populated compared to you, so I guess it works out fairly even anyway.

Well, each of the fifty states has at least
one state university. Some have multiple
campuses. A single campus might have 40,000
students. Finding space is not a problem,
given how much land some states have.
Then there are the private colleges and universities...

I really wasn't referring to the amount of space available, but to the fact that given total populations, we probably have a proportionately similar number of universities. Guess I didn't put it very well, did I?

We don't have state universities. But with the newer bills and feees they're trying to foist off on us, people like me won't be able to afford to go to Unis like the one I'm at for much longer

I've my fingers crossed that the AHRB is going to be extra nice and lavish me with funding this Autumn if not it's going to be...interesting...finding ways to pay for it all.

My mum and dad just hit the threshold for having to pay fees now Jamie's out of Uni. I hate having to beg off them. But I have rent to pay and food to buy. I can't see how on earth they expect you to live off £3k a year As it is, when I work hard all summer with my job, I can still barely cope without borrowing hugely off my parents... who can't really afford it themselves

That is so sad!
Here in Massachusetts, the local economy is
going down the drain, pulling down the state
budget with it. The University of Massachusetts
has already had to let lots of people go.
This will affect enrollment..... Fees will likely
go up, too.
