So GB, it is a horrible feeling. Maybe it isn't a permanent state and she will improve. Hospital is not the best place and there is little in the way of 'after care'. They are apparently all too busy (mostly at computer desks in my case) unless your hospitals are nicer.
Maybe with more company and care she will come back to you. My Dad did after weeks of asking me who I was, and was i getting paid for looking after him, and was this a hospital (my house!) He came back fully mentally though i am convinced he would rather I had let him go.

My mom went through a phase like that immediately after her most recent carotid bypass surgery, unable to recognize me the first few days.
Then, for a bit over year, no further trouble.
She's having trouble that way currently, depending on how well rested she is.
Her condition improved while she was in the hospital getting oxygen therapy a breathing machine support.
She's most disoriented when awakened prematurely.
Its as though she's still trapped in anxiety dreams she was having when wakened.
In the next round of treatment, the doctor has agreed to have her scheduled for a sleep disorder evaluation and to get her a CPAP machine so she'll have breathing support at home.
I'd never realized myself how had I was struggling to breathe while sleeping until I got onto my CPAP machine.

Thank you all
Mum is now in the convalescent home
I'm going to visit her this morning, after breakfast

I hope it is light and airy where she is, and everyone is cheerful. That makes such a difference, whether you can remember what you had for breakfast or not.

She seemed OK about where she is, is grateful for her own room and says the staff are nice I had to go on a shopping trip for necessaries and pick up some clothes for her as the staff like the patients dressed for meals in the dining room (good idea as it's a mixed facility). It wasn't half warm in there, good job as the hospital ward was damned freezing! She has a window overlooking the gardens

A hospital ward that is freezing - that's a first, all ours are unhealthily hot.
A window overlooking the gardens GB, now that will be a tonic, rather than walls and stuff to look at. Being dressed for meals is good too, it saves them getting a bit sloppy too.
Sounds good so far so I hope you are feeling better in yourself.
take care,

Mum in the convalescent home, just one layer of clothing on because she has a high temp. I asked what she'd had for lunch... "white meat" Chicken? [one of her favourite meals] (horrified look) "I don't eat chickens!"
It's a good job she doesn't know about the in the lasange eh?
Did I mention that my older 3 children's other Grandma was in hospital on the same ward (different bay) as my Mum? I popped to see her and my ex sisters-in-law a few times on the way out. I knew she was still in hospital as I've been keeping an eye on Heather's Facebook and I just messaged her this morning to ask after her Mum. She rang me this afternoon, just after Joyce passed away
I then had to ring my older 3 to tell them their Grandma Ogle had died. What's uncanny is the timing. When my Dad was diagnosed with stomach cancer, so was Grandad Ogle. Except he never came out of hospital from the exploratory surgery, within a week of diagnosis he died in his sleep. My Dad, of course, battled it for a year and still died.
This year started off so well but rapidly turned to shite. I've already lost a friend to cancer last month and now this. Excuse me while I go have a big weep.

A similar thing happened to us GB, losing two Granddads at almost the same time.
Sorry to hear your other news too.

My sister gave me a lift there today and then I enjoyed the walk home after. I even saw a shooting star, I think. The sun was setting so it could have been a flash on a satellite, or, as some wag said on Facebook, it could have been a spacemen taking my picture.
