Reading the backlog I've just been reminded that tomorrow is St. Patricks Day. Will have to have a Guiness or five.

thanks
a butty was the one thing i never tried while i was in england. must try it the next time. friend of mine told med about a butty that consists only of two pieces of toast, a lot of butter and chips. i thought he was joking, but it turned out he was dead serious

What exactly is a "butty"? Would you be refering to a sandwich? And if so, how did they get "butty" from "sandwich"???
I'll never figure the British out...

unless i am very much mistaken there is no difference between a sandwich and a butty *as such*. however, i imagine the inventor of the sandwich, sir john montagu - the 4th earl of sandwich - would probably be quite offended if you used his blue-blooded name for such a simple thing as a common butty
i guess a butty has its name from its main ingredient - butter - since the other ingredients are hardly any worth mentioning: stale, re-heated ( = toasted) bread of dubious origin and quality, smoked hog belly skin and the like
in short: you are right, michele: we'll never figure the british out

A butty is a sandwich with butter on one side of the bread {unless I've been making them wrong all these years} I love jam butties, but my son has butter butties for his packed lunch at school
I must admit I've never heard of chips between slices of toast

i believe the chips-version is from the north, but i'm not sure. someone told me about it years ago, but i can't remember if he was from manchester or liverpool.
anyway, here i denmark we have a sandwich called "amager-mad" ("amager" is the island that a part of our capital copenhagen lies on, "mad" is danish for food). it consist of one slice of white bread and one slice of rye bread. usually there is just butter between the slices, but honey or plain white sugar is also common. i haven't seen anything like it outside denmark - and i haven't missed it either...

Personally, I like peanut butter and banana sandwiches. you just spread peanut butter on one slice of bread, then slice a banana (crosswise or lengthwise) and place on top of the peanutbutter. Then top with the other slice of bread and it's great! However my sister likes to put a little jelly on her peanut butter/banana sandwish... Then you eat it accompanied by a large glass of ice cold strawberry milk! (strawberry Nestles syrup added to the milk)

There's an irish bar here in KC that makes a pastrami sandwich, with thinly shaved pastrami. You can have it on pumpernikel or rye bread...
Now I'm hungry!
