If you are going to pick your own dandelions you need to get them while they are young. the longer they grow the rougher and more bitter they get.
Most people in Michigan just treat them as a weed.

Herbal confusion? Herb is confused again, eh?
Here's more on the eating of squirrel brains:
http://hubpages.com/hub/The-H1N1-Virus-And-Hand-Washing
It all seems counterintuitive to me. Why the brains, when the flesh could be much tastier? When I was in Taiwan, I was given pig's brain soup, which I couldn't eat . But we humans too often let our choices become too narrowly constricted. Chicken, beef, fish, pork, turkey, yes. But why not beaver or rabbit or ostrich or possum? Some of these animals kept the pioneers alive and fairly healthy. Likewise with many wild plants that grow in woods and meadows. Why confine ourselves to cabbage and spinach and broccoli?
Heck, there have been societies that relied heavily on acorns. Wouldn't you rather learn how to remove the bitterness from acorns than stgarve to death?

Well that's it for eating squirrel brains then. Mad Squirrel Disease eh?
I'm all for eating the occasional wild plant, and wish I had paid a little more attention when we were studying fungi at college. Otherwise I shall just have to rely on the well known sort I recognise easily.

I like mushrooms...
Squirrel's not too meaty, but a couple would probably be the equivalent of a wild rabbit. They have hefty thighs I believe.
I've heard that Hedgehog aint too bad. Gut it, roast it in it's skin and then peel it like a lychee! Nom nom. Ooh, lychees...

Lychees are weird fruits, well the texture and shape of them is. Tasty though.
Have you ever eaten kakis (no sniggering at the name) otherwise known as persimmon, or sharan fruit? They have to be extremely ripe else they take all the juice out of your mouth, don't ask me how, but if you've ever tried to eat an under-ripe one you will know what I mean.
mmmmm just remembered I took a photo ....

I'm a massive lychee fan! HEWJ!
I love picking them open, though you need a finger bowl handy or you end up horribly sticky.
I think I have had sharan fruit but I dont remember...

You give names to all your mushrooms, prof?
is this because the caterpillar said "And who are you?" when he saw Alice?

I name all my mushrooms, and draw little faces on them, and put clothes on them, but then I eat them... I've a pack of baby button mushrooms in the fridge but I'm out for dinner tonight Ihope they're still ok tommorrow as I think a major mushroom cooking event must happen at some point

Relax, lanzababy. It's made with beef, and is basically a form of meatloaf. But you could put your mushroom gravy on steak.

I'm still giggling from the day before yesterday when Robyn suggested that no-one would expect the Spanish Inquisition in a portaloo. I know this was another thread - but I shall never pass by one ever again without an inner giggle.
