Title: The Royal h2g2 Geographical Entry Society
What is the art for? If possible, we'd like a banner for the Society's pages, and a badge for the members.
Text or Picture or Both? Picture and text.
What type of picture? Now, that's a tough one to call - our slogan is 'The Royal h2g2 Geographical Entry Society - By Land, By Sea, By Air' and if you look around at the Society pages at what I've used so far under the slogan, something along those lines would be lovely. I've tended to use the classic travel images available - Concorde, a Biplane, a classic car and a cruise liner - and personally I like the idea of the art deco period as being the classic age of travel, so anything of that nature would be great!
Do you require members' badges? If so what text? Yes please - I would also like a member's badge with the text 'The Royal h2g2 Geographical Entry Society - By Land, By Sea, By Air' on it.
Any particular colours? We're not fussy really, although I've never liked pink...

Well while you are waiting, here's an art deco style classic car blob: <./>B1079448</.>. This other one is a bit more gangster-like: <./>B1085525</.>.

what about something like a coat of arms (for the royal aspect) in quads with a globe, a plane, a car and a ship?

just a suggestion smiley - cheers

That'd be cool. How about a quartered shield, as you say, but maybe with the globe in the centre linking the four quarters? That'd free up a quarter, of course, so we could go for a slightly environmentally-friendly fourth choice, maybe either a train or a bicycle?

By the way, artists, do we have to wait until we're classified before someone gets assigned to do us a picture, or do we wait until the picture is made and *then* we get classified? I'm saying, is it the chicken or the egg that comes first?

By the way, does our coming up with a few ideas to bounce around help, or do you tend to prefer starting with (so to speak) a blank canvas?

In general I'd say the more ideas the better. BTW, there is quite a queue atm.

Well, let's get classified first... the sister thread over at the Community Choice submissions is as old as this one, and I've just given it its first bump to try and attract the attention of the overworked and underpaid at the Towers.

Yum!

I'm afraid it won't be ready until the end of next week at the earliest. Art deco and not pink, you say? Hopefully I'll be out of my pink phase by next week smiley - winkeye.

Hello geographical people

I've been mulling this over. I like your ideas - art deco is good. I'm not so sure about the shield shape since it isn't in keeping with art deco. I suggest a square badge with rounded or even inverted corners. Perhaps something like the SSO badge <./>B4414813</.> with art deco patterns added and semi-precious stones inserted.

The SSO badge is 80 pixels square but the badges are allowed to be 110 pixels square. However, even at that size it's going to be a squeeze to get all those words in. I'll do my best. I don't think there'll be any room for pictures on the badge.

I think it's best to do the badge first and then take some of the style elements into the banner rather than the other way around.

What do you think?

Hello smiley - biggrin. You haven't been forgotten - unlikely though that may seem.

I want to show you a prototype of the badge so that you can decide whether you really want all those words on it. The badges cannot be more than 110 pixels square, which doesn't give us much room. I've chosen an art deco colour scheme in which the blue represents the sky, the orange and yellow the land and the green the sea. And I've found a nice art deco font called Parisian.

You can view it here: http://www.amytheant.co.uk/community/geogsociety/index.htm

The banner doesn't show up because I haven't drawn it yet. The plan is to use the same colours in the background but to draw a ship on the left hand side, a train running across the middle and a plane in the sky on the top right.

The question again is, do you want all those words on the badge. They don't leave much room for anything else.

I've put up a draft of the banner to give you a better idea of what I have in mind.

I won't work on it any more until you've had a chance to mull it over.

I had an idea about the bottom half of the badge... how about instead of having 'By Land, By Sea, By Air', it simply says 'Researcher' in bold letters.

I quite like the idea, 'cos it kind of links in with that idea that all 'U' numbers are technically Researcher numbers, but the badge could be a nice way of showing that you do actually think of yourself as a Researcher.
