As far as the debate over spelling, informed comment vs. ignorant rants and general combativeness and offensiveness is concerned let me just say this: If you don't want to swim with us Oetzi, quit pissing in the goddamn pool! Most of us could care less about spelling as long as things are decipherable and the thoughts are cogent. Much of what I'm seeing is neither. Learn to think first post second. Read what you are responding to and make sure you understand it before sounding off. This is not elitist or snobbish, its simple courtesy and common sense.

But, y'see, I didn't twig to that at first and thought he was referring to something else, so I back-checked the date. THEN I realized he meant the movie.

Did anyone go back to the post I mentioned? Maybe it's time to put the WWWA thread to bed again. Haven't we all vented just a little too much? And, besides, all it's doing now is becoming a soapbox for a few individuals' malice, not just general pressure-valve whinging.

Its tending to go round in circles repeating the same arguments and some people can't disagree without insulting other people. The post you went back to was quite appropriate all things considered.

I think its as simple as something in the American mentality which doesn't agree with something in the British mentality. Like us and the french.

There certainly are cultural differences between any two big groups of people. There is a lot of backlog on this thread, and, from time to time, you will see reference to exactly that point.

It gets worse. Those of us in Texas are considered the "Ugly Texans" by most of the rest of the "Ugly Americans". Not without reason, of course, since some Texans really are blowhards who consider every other state, plus foreign countries, as second-rate at best. Especially Oklahoma, my home state.

And people in Dallas look down on Houstonians. And as the Kingston Trio sings, "Italians hate Yugoslavs, South Africans hate the Dutch. And I don't like anybody very much." (The last line sung with a slight drunken slur).

Like other aspects of American "culture", obesity seems to be, uhhh, spreading to the UK and Europe. A recent NY Times article on American eating habits showing up over there included a report on the new "Krispy Kremes" counter in Harrod's department store. Some thanks for the Beatles, huh?

If you view cultures as personalities you see flaws in all of them, as we see in your mates, as we have in ourselves. I think people dislikes americans because of how inescapable there's is. If (for example) you don't the like the french, don't go to france. If you don't like america what can you do? not watch the tv, not listen to the radio, not walk down the high street. weather america is go or bad is subjective, but you can't avoid it, it is far to pervasive

Yes, Hollywood revisionism is one of my main gripes, rev. The sad thing is that so many people end up *believing* the Hollywood version! My father was from the UK,he fought in WW2 and lost a brother, and he hated Hogan's Heroes, for its treatment of historical fact - and when he explained, we decided to boycott it... This was in the late 1960s. My father died in 1974, so he didn't get to see the stuff like 'Private Ryan' and U-571. (Just as well, he'd have had a stroke!)

I beg to differ, DCS. I heard on the BBC WS this morning, an item about the Maquilladoras. The Mexicans are anything *but* happy about the way they are treated, and NAFTA is one of the prime problems.

The innmates have taken over the asylum. I didn't think reality could get anymore skewed after I read Oetzi talking about the backlog of *this* thread.
