Yes, Lentilla, it is an issue for the UN! There is an extreme-right website I go to sometimes, which has a big banner flashing,with a swastika and the assertion that the UN is evil and racist! I tried the banner, it was a link to the 'unisevil' website, and gave the information that it (the unisevil site) was 'supported by' Capitalism magazine. With all this, I have to ask, "what gives?" Needless to say, I answered the site's poll by saying that I did NOT think the UN is evil and racist. How bizarre it all is! We need an invasion from Oblov Mov, evil galaxy warlord to put it all right, or maybe the Zartanians. (See [Broken link removed by Moderator]

Nothings rong with the people American people its the atitude of the goverment thats the real problem. I found this article http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A20083-2002Aug31.html in the online washington post and I think that it probes the pont o the conversation.

Well, indeed. Post 2565 being a prime example of not adding to the debate, just fuelling the fire.

I'm resurrecting this thread so that anyone who wants to yell and scream about Americans rather than have a reasonable debate where ideas are actually exchanged and listened to can do so.

I thought it might be more theraputic than starting thread after thread yelling about everything from American government to the culture to the people themselves.

What's different about Americans that they should be singled out in this way... everybody who is human, whatever their race, nationality, religion etc, have less desirable foibles... I don't get it...

And no, I'm not American...

What's different about Americans? Well, they currently have a President who wants to have a war which may well escalate into World War II. They have an Empire gained through (a)manipulation (b)stealth (c) conquest (d) economic hegemony. Let's see ... what else? They don't stand up to their morally bankrupt fuhrer!
Individual Americans may well be fine upstanding people, but they aren't the ones gunboat diploming all over the right now!

That should be "may well escalate into World War III" of course!

Most countries are guilty of atrocities, including the UK. There must be more constructive things than spending time dredging up threads like this. I wonder if these 'researchers' have spent as much time writing letters of complain to the powers they're unhappy with as they've spent moaning on here

Well, I for one certainly have, Queeglesproggit, I even wrote to the FBI about the treatment of prisoners snatched and kept incommuniado since Sept 11th for the crime of walking while Arab - Mr FBI dude didn't reply for 8 months, and then wanted me to name specific agents. From NZ, yeah, right!

I just get annoyed with 'armchair moaners', because everybody seems to think that we can't change anything so why bother. If all those people got up and shouted, it'd make a damn big roar.

I've written several letters to the person I've complained about around here, but I'm Canadian so Mr. Bush hasn't written back. I also write letters and make phone calls and fax the people at the top in my country and my province. They respond.

But you know, when you hear an American soldier in Afghanistan saying that they just think of Canada as "America North" (especially in light of later events in Afghanistan) it kind of gets my back up.

You know, I was just looking over Great Western Lettuce's reference to the Guardian (http://www.guardian.co.uk/comment/story/0,3604,789970,00.html). It reminds me of a story from a long time ago in a very nearby place. Once upon a time Mikail Gorbachev declared a unilateral moratorium on nuclear testing by the Soviet Union. All over the world the news media reported this as "Mikail Grobachev declares unilateral moratorium on nuclear testing" or something very like that. In the United States, every major news outlet except for two reported the story as "Mikail Gorbachev offers to stop nuclear testing." A friend of mine comented "at least in the Soviet Union you know that most of what you read in the paper is a lie."
I have to agree, looking from the outside, but being able to examine the same news that American citizens get, American news outlets, lead by the ministry of propoganda, CNN, do a grave disservice to ordinary Americans.

Speaking as an American, my addition to this debate would be like saying "I haven't heard any secrets", but I would like to subscribe to this and see what becomes...

::Also subscribing, and of the opinion that there is a great deal wrong with a lot of U.S. citizens, but hey-- if you don't know what the rest of the world is really like, then how can you know what's wrong with your world!??::
