Hey!!! But at least the Japanese know where to find Australia on the map!!! A recent geography test revealed that a small percentage of Yankees tested knew where New York was... and this was AFTER the attacks!!!

I apreciate you taking the time to answer but I did not ask you about self esteem i was refering to the below:
The Question was:
If I may ask you one Question Dragonfly. If your mother is a victim of the 'media's fear where do you get your Information in order to make the above statement ?

See, I didn't understand what you were getting at (that's why I asked a first time) ... I'm still not sure that I understand just what you are asking.
The media touches and "informs" us all.
But I also live outside the media, and I keep company quite different from my mother's. I listen to students and professors at college, as well as co-workers. I tune in to talk radio. I keep an occasional eye on a site called bushwatch.com. I also read what is assigned to me in school(Currently, essays for Advanced Comp...). All this helps me form my opinion that my mother is a victim of the media's fears.
I asked a handful of co-workers (a couple of them mothers) if they had bought duct tape and bottled water in case of an attack. They can't see the logic in it.
And on a personal note, I think that if you are going to be attacked viciously, then maybe it's best to not be paranoid and over-protective about yourself and your family. Herrrmm.... better to life as a victim with psychological and perhaps physical scars, or, better to just be done with this cruel, twisted, painful existence!?? It's kinda like a failed suicide attempt. The memory will be there if you survive.
I don't know how satisfactorally I've broached your question, or if I even touched on it at all. Please. What are you asking me!?? Reword it, if I've failed to answer. Because I don't understand what you are saying.

What I was saying was that unless we personally witness events all other sources are heresay. Whether you see,hear or read something in the media. Read books refrancing history, essays, talk to students or professers. The information you recieve will be biased to some point because it was a conveyed by another. {All humans have precocieved ideas,predudices,agenas and shortcomings}
It was nothing personal against you dragonfly I assure you.

Don't doubt American geography skills, a quite recent survey shows that a whole 76% of American school students can point out the USA on the map! Though to think of it, I'm not sure which map it was. I took it to mean a world map, but knowing Americans it could just as easily be a map of their own country.

I'm sorry, mrs the wife, that my comment sounded a bit 'I'm all right Jack", it certainly wasn't meant to be!
In part it is a comment on the hysteria that a few hoax letters to a newspaper are causing here in NZ. (I am so convinced these letters are hoaxes, that if anything happens *here* I'll go and kneel before Leighton Smith and apologise personally, (if I am alive to do it, of course.) It must be well scary to be in London!
I love your comment about Blair...

Why would you say something so negitive about sweden? Are you implying that sweden is not signifigant enough for any americans to learn it's location or one of it's languages? Why would you say such things about sweden?

This past autumn. The National Geographic Society. I don't remember the age, or how many people-- I heard it on the news and it was discussed in my history class. Percentages!?? You expect me to remember numbers!?? Bless your heart!!! Dunno locations, either... but it was a worldwide study in which the U.S. came out just about Mexico... who ranked last.
I use the term Yankee incorrectly, to refer to all U.S. citizens. At least I don't call them Americans, which is even more incorrect. Yankee's easy to type, you see!!!!

Okay I know this is getting away from the current aspect under discussion and also that theres nothing you can say which wont result in someone saying 'How can you make generalisations like that?' - I am fully aware that all people are different and that stereotypes are not to be believed etc. However -
Americans freely tell you that they're NUMBER ONE which is boastful and arrogant whatever way you look at it - pride is one of the deadly sins remember.
SO much money has been blindly donated to the IRA over the years by Americans who (I hope) didnt take the time to check out their facts and dont have to live with the cycle of violence which they were helping to perpetuate.
For giving us Anthony Robbins, nuff said.

Dragonfly very good you answered most my Questions and it is appreciated. I just wanted to point out that polls are easily skewerd depending on the agenda of the pollster, Questions asked, people poled, culture, location, ect. and interpitation.
The yankees was only to give you a head up that many persons from the south and others would not like that term applied to them.
American / United States you are right.
