Any New Year's Resolutions?
Bluebottle Posted Jan 24, 2017
It always amuses me that at this time of year things that people have given up, like , especially multi-packs, go down in price just to tempt people back into buying them.

Arms and ammo prices should drastically drop in the US now that false threats that Obama would seize everyone's guns are now finally put to rest.

Maybe bricks and concrete blocks will go up in price in anticipation of the wall that Trump will build on the U.S.-Mexican border .
Should I point out that Trump's policy of putting America first isn't going to happen if he doesn't also put Americans' needs first. Taking away their health insurance seems to violate that principle.

I'm surprised there's so much fuss over Trump's "putting America first" slogan. It sounds an awful lot like the slogans of previous presidential candidates, as well as political partes in the UK. Countries negotiate with each other all the time, and I'd be very surprised if anyone engaged in diplomatic discussions of any sort without the aim of putting their own country first.
Maybe the other things Trump said during his campaign have altered the meaning of that phrase in people's eyes.

And there goes yet another long thought out post, wiped out by the server issues.
(Yea, yeah... I know I should copy/paste everything, but I forget and I shouldn't have to.)

To summarize, Trump's "America First" slogan, in context of all the ultra-nationalist, xenophobic, "alt-right"(neo-nazi) rhetoric coming from him and his followers is reminiscent of "Deutschland Uber Alles".
Also he emphasized "ONLY America First" and this attitude suggests he will not consider options that are mutually beneficial. Trump and his ilk of free market conservatives see the world as a zero-sum game, for America to win, others must lose.

A successful businessman like Trump isn't foolish enough to waste time negotiating if there isn't a win-win option. The thing is how to spin it so that the people believe he has achieved the best possible result.
In business, if one part of the Trump Corporation shows it's not as profitable as the others, then he's likely to sell it off, and buy other businesses which have better profit potential. This isn't a concept that he can apply to America inc, but he will cut costs, as Reagan and Thatcher did. Cutting costs in business has far greater returns than winning new business - it comes off the bottom line. He will be very good at that. You are right to be concerned.

I do wonder sometimes about the real reason things are given up in January. Lots of people get paid before Christmas in December, so they can buy Christmas and, presumably, double-discount sofas in the Boxing Day Sales. If they then wake up at 5pm on New Year's Day with only £42 left on to last until next pay day on January 31st, it's no wonder they give up and ….

Maybe they have to live on frozen dinners from the Dollar Store [or U.K. equivalent] for a month?

When our pay system was entirely dealt with by pencil and paper, none of the twice a months pays were quite the same. And then they thought that they were doing us a favour by giving is the full month of December in one pay. Very people that I ever knew were able to fully stretch that December 15th pay (usually in cash) until January 15th.

Ah. The dollar store. The UK equivalent is the pound shop (sometimes 99p shop or similar).
Today the dollar is worth about 79p.
Does this mean that thinks in the dollar store are 1/5th smaller or 1/5th carpier?
PP.

$1 = 79p!?
That makes the pound even cheaper than when I went to England in 1985. Then I could exchange £1 for between $1.29-$1.36 so $1 was about 73p-77p.

Very likely, yes. I don't know how they manage to sell mouthwash with the same ingredients as Listerine, in the same amount, but at four dollars less per bottle.
