Donnie Darko was a good movie for various reasons but its sequel S. Darko was one of the worst movies ever made.
The Butterfly Effect was a good movie its sequel Butterfly Effect II was rubbish.

They are all real sequels appearing in a portal to another dimension soon.

I'm looking forward to the Hunger Games sequels: the books contain some really good ideas, let down by some poor writing/editing. I think the films will be a chance to fix that.

Grown Ups 2 - wouldn't watch it if you paid me. Just looks awful.

Pacific Rim - if Del Toro was doing a sequel, I'd be interested. He doesn't do unnecessary sequels: imo Blade 2 and Hellboy 2 are the only ones he's done and they were brilliant. If it's not Del Toro then not a chance.

As for other films:

The Matrix. It's for the best they never made any sequels to that

Inception. At first I liked the idea of sequels using the technology and maybe playing with genres, but I think after the first, sequels would end up being a disappointment.

Source Code. Similar to Inception, the possibility for sequels exists, I just hope they don't as the original is a beautiful little film in its own right.

Which is why I and friends never name it, referring to it as "The Scottish film". Ugh. smiley - ill

Sequels I shall avoid:

Blade Runner 2. Given that we're less than six years away from the year in which the original was set, does anyone believe this WON'T get made? Scott's even talked about it. Hateful concept.

The "300" sequel - I saw the trailer and assumed for a few moments that it was a fan-made parody, but apparently they really have made a sequel. No thanks.

"Planes" - the Pixar follow up to "Cars 2", which I didn't see...

The next Superman movie... depending on who they cast as Batman. I might be persuaded.

Any sequel for which Michael Bay is responsible.

I am really looking forward to Kick-Ass 2. I may be watching it later today.
Hunger Games films don't really qualify as sequels, as they were always intended to be a series of films based on the books.
The worst sequel I can think of is Speed 2: Cruise Control, but the one that disappointed me most was Chronicles of Riddick. It took a grounded, gritty space cowboy kind of film with references to real things (menthol cools, people addicted to ordinary real-world medications, etc.) and turned it into a daft space opera. Everything I loved about Pitch Black was eliminated from the sequel.

I saw that on the telly once, not a pleasant experience - it was to be Part 2 of the Blair Witch trilogy - as far as I know, they never made part 3...

That's because the production team disappeared, and no-one bothered trying to find them, isn't it?

(I don't have anything to offer for now, I'm taking notes).

I kept waiting for 'Son of the Guns of Navaronne', but some reason, that one was never made.smiley - shrug

Regrettably, there are some sequels I saw that I *wish* I hadn't seen, but that's water under the bridge smiley - erm

The reason I don't want to see the sequel to "Kick Ass" is that it had child actors committing such extreme violence that they wouldn't be allowed to see the movie if they went to a movie theater to see it. That seemed disturbing to the late Roger Ebert, and it made me think. We all have our reasons for seeing movies, and sometimes our own personal conceptions of morality enter into them. [For what it's worth, I kept an open mind about Ebert's review, and after I saw the movie, I decided that one exposure was enough. Maybe the kids in the movies will soon be old enough to get past the PG-17 or R ratings. Many film directors who use characters under 18 get around the restrictions by hiring actors who are actually older than that. This is why you all too often see 25-year-old actors playing high school students].

Whoever has used the term 'worst sequel ever' above is wrong.

I give you:-

Blues Brothers 2000.

I win.

It's also to avoid limits on working hours/compulsory education rules. I read they basically built a school on the Harry Potter set for all the kids acting in the films.

I agree that "Blues Brothers 2000" was pretty bad. I sometimes settle for less than stellar sequels because everything else that's available has already been seen or is much worse. Nevertheless, I absolutely ruled out "Smurfs 2" this week. I was open to seeing the first one, but enough is enough! smiley - winkeye

I quite liked Chronicles of Riddick meself. Yes, it is a fairly different film to Pitch Black, but you couldn't just do a retread of the first film, you need to go somewhere else.

The second film shows you some of the rest of the universe that PB hints at. In PB Riddick starts as the villain of the piece, you then discover that there is something in the planet that is worse than him, and he ends up as the hero.

In Chronicles, Riddick starts as a renegade, and ends up as a reluctant king, in effect. It's Conan's story really - Riddick is the Barbarian. There are some nice bits of the film too. Everything on Crematoria is great, from the prison and Riddick's arrival in it, to the teacup, to the dogs, to the escape and race against the dawn. Thinking about it, the Crematoria scenes do play like a retread of PB, but there's a wider movie going on around it.
