There's a hitchhiker wiki - who knew?
hygienicdispenser Posted Mar 25, 2013
Yes, I think it is. I was tempted to change entries to entry's, for the sake of consistency, but thought that might be a bit rude. Someone has updated the bit about this site's ownership earlier today.

hmmm, look, there are people there with a common interest
I'd offer them a and some
, if I was socialable like,
instead of getting slightly defensive about their existance, and snippy at thier use of apostrophes, or whatever

Careful Peanut, you're liable to be burned as a witch with heresy like that.
I'm busy whittling jwf's thoughts on "Twits" down into manageable chunks to tell those social media using outsiders that they ain't welcome in these parts, boy.
Which, I admit, runs counter to the things I'm supposed to do with Comms...

I don't have a problem with them - they do their own thing, and they link to us. Sharing with them sounds like a good plan!

S'Okay Peanut - I was trying to say, as was Milla, that they are a different kettle of , and the apostrophe thingy was
, although I see I am not alone.
Over each entry, there is an "edit" tab, like in wikipedia. I didn't look to see if you have to register in order to edit.

Florida Sailor,
> I'm sorry, I just am not a fan of Wikki, I have not seen anything original on their site for years, in fact last time I looked it was against their rules.
What are you talking about?
Wiki: A type of software for creating websites which are easily edited.
Wikia: A collection of fan sites for different books, running Wiki software. The one we're talking about now, for example, is the Hitchhikers wikia site.
Wikipedia: An encyclopaedia built on Wiki software, run by the MediaWiki Corporation.
Wiktionary: A dictionary built on Wiki software, run by the MediaWiki corporation.
TV Tropes: A site dedicated to finding patterns in literature, built on Wiki software.
I'm guessing you're complaining about the MediaWiki sites. I don't see what that has to do with the Wikia site we're talking about here.
TRiG.

I don't know, its not that I am opposed to learning new things.
I put in a search for Wiki Software. the first three choices pointed to Wikipedia sites. I picked the forth one and as soon as I hit their "about" link I was back to Wikipedia
In my humble opinion Wikipedia is a detriment to searching the web, they bury the serious sites by flooding the search engines with their own stuff, almost all of which has been lifted from other sites and re-arranged for their own use.
When I see anything with the Wiki prefix I try to avoid linking to it.
Perhaps I am being unfair I don't mean to paint everyone who logs onto a Wiki site with the same broad brush, It just makes me less likely to want to read what they have to say.
Should anyone from the other site decide to create an account here I would certainly welcome them with open arms!
I hope we can still be friends
F S

Sorry. Don't mind me. I get grumpy when I'm posting at 2 a.m. (Well, I'm actually only slightly grumpy, but I sound very grumpy, for some reason.) Sorry 'bout that.

Maybe this site is just not the best example of a wiki. So maybe I can explain it on different examples.
As some of you know I am a gamer and as such I see wikis as a very valuable source of information.
Look at this for instance:
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Main_Page
It's a relatively new game so a lot of information is still missing but in the long run this site will give information about all kinds of items, monsters, building 'plans' for all kinds of stuff, a database of all armors and weapons with pictures and many other things.
In the past things like that have been done on non-wiki websites but today every game has a wiki.
Why?
They are easy to build, the whole system is already there so they all work the same way. This makes it easy to add things and to find things. Everyone knows how to use them. If you know one you know them all. It is not a place to chat, it is only a place for information built by a community of 'specialists' if you want to call it that.
Other communities do the same, here is for instance the wiki for Warhammer:
http://www.lexicanum.com/
Mind you, black text on gray background may not have been a good idea, still it is a good way to get information.
Both these sites do a good job and while a wiki may not have been the only way to build them up it is certainly a good if not the best decision for them. Even if they would not be an actual wiki, would they be a lot different? Or better?
