But is it art daaahlink?

>>Way I look at it, if someone wants to call an unmade bed art they're quite welcome to... just as long as they don't expect me to call it art as well.
I would no more dismiss her work as an unmade bed, any more than I would do a da Vinci as a piece of oily canvas. I prefer to judge art by criteria other than the materials from which it is made.

Im an artist - some of my work is very contemporary - work not seen before but its not acceptable because - because - ?
however hard they try, it seems that there are still endless invisible rules - till then all this strangeness can go hang, its pretentious twaddle and only there because someone with the right crude entials did it.

'He who works with his hands is a labourer.
He who works with his hands and his head is a craftsman.
He who works with his hands and his head and his heart is an artist.'
attributed to St. Francis of Assisi

The 21st Century version is surely "he who makes a pile of stuff and attaches some meaningless 'concept' to it is an artist"?

and:
'. . . here I must desire all those critics to mind their own business, and not to intermeddle with affairs or works which no ways concern them; for till they produce the authority by which they are constituted judges, I shall not plead to their jurisdiction.'
Henry Fielding

That work measures 73 x 143-inches, so it's not fair to judge it just by looking at a small image of it on your computer.

I think it's because a photograph, an easily reproducable medium, has been sold for millions. I'm not as annoyed as swl, but I'm certainly thinking "what the...?"
