h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

Just saw an ad for a Vanish product which appears to be the new Shake-n-vac. At the end, the woman who's been doing the vacuuming with the miracle product settles down on the white carpet, the door opens, and the voiceover says "oh look, it's Chesney Hawkes."

Now the only sensible interpretation I can come up with is that Mr Hawkes is The One And Only n i g h t h o o v e r, but modern adverts frequently confuse me, so I may be missing something.

Am I?

really? Really? is this the level of television adverts these days? I'm so so so so lucky I no longer have a TV... Its worse even than the quality and subtlety of local radio adverts for local cab firms err... only actually an awful lot less clear about what the eck its trying to say, or, indeed, sell Nope. the entire advert makes no sense to me whatsoever....

When you start to sing along to the ads on local radio you know its time to get your bumps felt.

I recall Viz magazine informing its readers that it is impossible to make an anagram of Chesney Hawkes without using the word w*nk.

The voiceover man in the ad sounds VERY like Dave Lamb who does the sarcastic commentary on 'Come dine with me'

I listened to an ad the other night that had the voiceover done by somebody doing a Woss Kemp impression!
(I don't mean he sounded like the ex spouse of a phone hacker)

Bizarrest advert, not on telly, in the window of an opticians. A life-size cardboard cut-out head and shoulders of Acker Bilk, with the words 'Acker Bilk says "Get your eyes tested regularly"'.

He must be topping up his pension

But... some local radio adds are so* brilliant, because of their awfulness.... for which reason I'll never forget the telephone number for taxi firms in Manchester, Lowestoft, Norwich, Cambridge, and probalby if I thought about it long enough, for torquay, and some other places too
*hums a highly repetitive tune, with the words 'five one, Taxis, get you there, five one taxis, the cheaper fare'... damn... I'm gona have that in my head all night now arn't i?

Strangely - or perhaps not - I worked for years with a niece of Acker Bilk (seemingly an all round decent bloke) - not that that's got anything to do with Chesney Hawkes...

And is this Cheesey Hawes any relation to Keeley Hawes?
