Well at 90 characters I guess I could be culled.Hope not as I just can't express myself with just 50.

Ok, don't know whether anyone has already mentioned this elsewhere.
I was logged in earlier and went for a 'wander' to other parts of the BBC sites such as the Have Your Say page to look at the views/comments re. recent cutback announcement. No harm in that as they say.
However, when I came back to hootoo and my ps, I suddenly noticed my name had been shortened, NOT modded, just shortened. I was logged in during my travels so it looks as though there is some automated mechanism to automatically shorten names to below the 50 character limit.
I put the original name back via the plain page wotsit and went on my travels again. Lo and behold, when I came back to hootoo my name had been shortened again. Seems it's ok if you stay in hootoo.

Yep. Me too. I just posted a comment on Have Your Say and lost my entire hootoo name. It took me all the way back to my BBCiD name (turvy).
*nips of to plain country to put it back - I love copy and paste!!*

I had my name modded too back on the 18th Feb, and received the email 'Your Nickname 'RadoxTheGreen - full of love for the person who burgled my house (I'd love to throw them in a pit and fill it in)' has been changed back to
'194063', since it contravenes the House Rules'
I had described said burglar as scum of the earth on an earlier post which had been left unyikesed. I took it that the modding was because it was OK by the Beeb rules to call someone scum of the Earth but not to say you want to put them under it. Now though, having read the backlog of this thread I am wondering if it was down to using the plain skin workaround to get the tag length which prompted the mod instead.
Maybe we'll all have to switch to thread signatures instead

Isn't the problem that there are two sets of moderators, the hootoo ones, wha are a civilised bunch, and the rest of the beeb ones, who are, shall we say, more sensitive?

I finally got a reply from the Eds - bog standard reply same as in post #5
"Since we switched over to the BBC iD sign-in system nicknames have been capped at 50 characters across the BBC. We're working on a site specific solution to allow for longer names on h2g2, but in the meantime we'd politely ask members of the community not to work round the restriction, as it's not something we can technically support at present. So as a rule we are failing new nicknames that break the character restriction."
I was going to reply arguing that it was not a new name, it was reset after loosing it due to using another computer to sign on, but decided against that, the Eds are over-worked and under-staffed as it is, it's not that important, I'll just use my tag for my opinion and see if that's allowed

You can call me TC Posted Mar 3, 2010
When I started reading this thread I was me.
When I followed the link to "Who's Online" on page 1, I was just my researcher number.
So I've been chopped in the last 5 minutes. Don't know if it was because the name was just too long, or because I had "Hands off 6music" in it.
By the time you read this, I shall have had another bash at reinstating my identity.

Right. I've shrunk it by taking out all the spaces. Still 51 characters. Will probably have two e-mails when I get home tonight!

BMT Posted Mar 3, 2010
I may be wrong but it looks like a max of 50 characters is ok for hootoo and a maximum of 30 characters for other parts of the BBC sites where a login is required.
My name wasn't modded back to a U number, it was just shortened to 30 characters when I went wandering.

~ is not well liked by this new automated system thingamajig
I got my ~wings~ clipped even though I was within the 50 character limit...
How on am I going to fly now ?

Open a second account in another browser and do your non-h2g2 bbc wandering on that.
