minichessemouse - Ahoy there me barnacle! Posted Oct 30, 2009
Hmm, how does one transfer an account to another e-mail address. I don't *need* my second account but it's useful. I think both my accounts are on the same e-mail address.
I missed the single sign on thingy, but I have heard stories.
The only being able to ave one account per e-mail is probably a good idea though.

I think if you change the email address of your second account now, in the current system, you then just upgrade that account (along with the other, 'first' account) and therefore you'll have two, but with two different email addresses. Each new account needs a separate email address.
Apparently, if you use gmail, you can have, say, [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] etc and, despite them all being technically different email addresses, all the mail goes through to the one mail account. I haven't tested this, but I was told it recently.

You can certianly seperate the letters by dots, e.g. joebloggs@ joe.bloggs@ j.o.e.b.l.o.g.g.s@ etc. and they will end up in the same inbox.

Ah! I didn't know that.

I think that applies only to gmail, though.

Two questions.
Do we have to go through the absolute pain of making another email account to keep two acocunts in order to split information? ( i really hate making acocunts as I can never remember my details).
And outside of hootoo (where we can change our screen name) are we able to change how our name is displayed?
For example my screen name on hootoo and my username is "nosebagbear" but i appear elsewhere as something else (this could be either a different account or as a set screename) that Sarries fans associate with me so they know who is posting.
Can different screen names be set for different areas of the beeb; outside of h2g2 ?

You can do a lot of things with Gmail. The dot thingy has been mentioned, and also [email protected] = [email protected].
And there's the plus addressing, which I believe also works with some other e-mail providers.

I'm not really here Posted Oct 30, 2009
Heh, this is how it was when I joined back in the 90s, one email address per account.
I've got too keep my two main h2g2 accounts. There's no way anyone is going to transfer 70-odd edited entries from U290 to U94986 for me, is there? And if they did, I don't fancy resubscribing to them all, plus all the current conversations! So I need to keep that one, and of course, this is my original account, so have to keep this one.
Ta for the early warning.

I'd transfer 70 edited entries for you, Mina, but it might still be confusing.

Sorry to join this late.
1. If you never go anyway other than h2g2 then you don't have to do anything right now. Our plan is to put h2g2 in the new system sometime after Xmas.
(But there are some nice things on BBC Online outside h2g2 you know...)
2. There are already help pages you can use for the new system here:
https://id.bbc.co.uk/users/help#id-help-general
I'm glad that people here seem to be finding it easy to upgrade their accounts.

Hi, Nick, thanks for dropping by
Question: I have two accounts to migrate - this one, and U14038290, which I use only for updating the Artists' library. If I temporarily transfer that account to my personal e-mail address, can I later switch it back to the one I use for hootoo later, by editing which address things get sent to? Several people have access, so I'd rather not keep it linked to my personal mail.

This is getting more and more confusing. Are you saying that if somebody created a gmail account using my username (for gmail) their emails would get to may account?
And I have no idea how to upgrade my h2g2 account (I guess I'll need to do that for the hub?)

I don't suppose there's an option to change your membername on an existing account?
Not that it's generally viewable, but I misspelled it during SSO, and it's slightly irritated me since...

To those who have password organization concerns, check out keepassx, a FOSS, cross-platform password manager. You store all your passwords/logins in an encrypted database, which can be copied to other media, such as flash drives, handy for those 'net cafe sessions
A password generator is included

I don't imagine you'll need to upgrade your account for the Hub, because that's part of DNA. They're talking about the BBC blogs here. And perhaps Have Your Say.
As for the Gmail thing, if you own [email protected], no one can get hold of [email protected], or of [email protected]. Those are just aliases of your address. This can be useful if you want two different e-mail addresses that deliver to the same inbox.

Aah!!
As I don't actually do more than read some of the other boards, then I don't need to worry about breaking anything, do I?

>> ...the screen you get when you click "retrieve my details" <<
I have never seen such a button.
Or I would have updated my email addy five years ago.
I keep wondering if the BEEB has been trying to reach me.
But I'll be damned if I would re-register and lose access
to my current user number and homepage. That seemed to be
the only way.
Since I do not participate in any other BBC webpages (except
as any non-registered viewer/listener/reader would to their
wonderful news, motorsports, music and drama pages) I hope I
can just carry on being U162334.
But I will be happy to update my email address if I knew where
that button was.
