Why does everyone assume that if Eddie Izzard got the role he'd play it as a tranny? For Bod's sake, the man is an ACTOR! You might just as well have objected to Sean Connery getting the role of James Bond, saying "Oh, no, he'll play it wearing a milkman's uniform!", or to Billy Connolly in "Mrs. Brown", wondering how he was going to manage to play a Victorian servant while wearing a welding mask. Watch "Interview with the Vampire" - does Tom Cruise play LeStat as a Scientologist? Duh.
Eddie Izzard is an actor with range. It's an insult to him to keep harping on about the clothes he chooses to wear while doing his standup act.

Also, he does not where womens clothes. He wears his own clothes.

I wouldn't expect him to wear high heels, but I also wouldn't want him as the Doctor.
A) He wouldn't do it. I'm sure world tours are both more fun and more profitable than BBC dramas.
B) His face is too recognisable. I'm not saying that the part should be played by a complete unknown, but someone too famous comes with too much baggage and detracts from the programme.

Dear Hoo. I am very if I upset you, I wasn't objecting rather relishing the idea of someone stretching the boundaries of the normal Dr mould. Of course I am well aware of Eddie's other acting roles and have seen him live in stand up shows. That doesn't alter the fact that he calls himself an "Action Transvestite" surely this would be the ultimate role for him.

It's OK, m-m, I'm not upset, and it's not just you, it's everyone who mentions Izzard as a possibility. "Ooh, the Doctor in a dress", as though Eddie Izzard is a-man-in-a-dress, ALL the time. He's an actor, and from what I've seen a pretty good one.

Well I did only mention high heels and even when dressed in what would be termed male clothes he often wears high heels with his outfit.

I think one of the reasons Mr Izzard would not make a good doctor is that he's (as far as I've seen) a god-awful actor. He's a marvellous comedian, but certainly not an actor.

I concur with Intelligent Moose. I think Eddie Izzard would be a terrible Doctor, and if anyone mentions Colin Baker well... at least he could act (and apparently the outfit and personality for his Doctor were forced on him, he wanted a more sinister character which, from what I hear, he now has with the Big Finish audios. It seems Colin has redeemed himself)

Colin's reputation has shot from one end to the other, thanks to Big Finish. He's the prime example of an actor in the role being badly served by his scripts (in the TV show)

Well for my worth, I think Eddie would make a great Dr. but my favorite at the moment is Richard E. Grant for the role.

Here are a couple of suggestions I've not seen elsewhere:
Robert Lindsay (Citizen Smith, My Family, Nightingales)
Has the right degree of manic energy, is old enough, is familiar with the rigours of shooting TV, is a bloody good actor, is not going to get typecast. Possibly *too* familiar looking though, although no more so than was Davison.
Ray Winstone (Nil by Mouth, Scum)
How about a totally different take on the character - grizzled, universe weary, but with that spark of individuality always shining through? Possible contender for the Doctor's "last" regeneration?

Yep, Hoover, single and happy with it.
Dr Who is a special case - I wouldn't give that up for anyone...

Robert Lindsay, yes please. Apart from anything else, our LG should get first dibs on 'an evening with' sessions, since he's local boy
Trouble is, he's already got 'My Family'. Which, whilst being shite, is also a nice weekly pay packet. Would the BBC want to end one hit for another?

To be honest, I think that every other actor on the BBCs list ( http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/tv_and_radio/4396295.stm ) would be a better choice than David Tennant. A "pretty boy" Doctor is just a pathetic marketing ploy ("oooh, watch Doctor Who ladies, isn't he dishy...") which will only shorten the lifespan of the show (people *like* good character actors, people go off pretty boys very quickly when the next one comes along)

'A graph of Singledom measured as a fraction of lifespan plotted against Doctor Who obsession measured as a fraction of lifespan'.
My money's on a hyperbola .
