Btw, I don't reply to the hate mail. But it keeps coming.

Myself, I would consider posting the email here, and making your thoughts about it clear, to count as replying -- hitting the reply button isn't the only way to respond to an email.

what did you mean by "counts" as replying?

Well, az said above that "Btw, I don't reply to the hate mail. But it keeps coming." -- leaving the impression that normally, she would expect a non-response to lead to the mail stopping, which is quite reasonable.
But the the thing is, posting the email and responding to it in a place where you expect the writer to see *is* replying. It's just replying to a much broader group, but it's still replying. It's not really any different than replying to the email but adding on a cc: to 100 other random people who may or may not be interested.

Arnie Appleaide - Inspector General of the Defenders of Freedom Posted May 20, 2005
OK, I'll agree with that, but I think you've neglected the personal & direct nature of the email response. In this way, a reply is given, but it is much more impersonal in nature.
Also in a perfect world, maybe Az would have the email addresses of everyone (maybe she does anyway, but doesn't think its ethical to use that information), and could just email us all the content. Or we would all be subscribed to a private Bulletin Board Service where she could post it. But it isn't a perfect world. So posting on hootoo is the compromise. Everyone sees, email addresses aren't used unethically, and no personal direct response.

So to summerise:-
Posting racist anti american bile, using a term the mods call "racist" in the context it was used against a researcher of an ethnic minority, posting a "death threat", then posting again to say it was serious, getting involed at some point or another in flame war behavior with a host of researchers including:-
Blathers, Hoovooloo, Ferrettbadger, Azahar, Anhaga, Blickbadger, AGC Ben, Potholder, Dave Captain Obvious, Sgt Flipper, Six7, Kea, Teaswill.
And that is just off the top of my head, I bet there are loads of others I cannot even remember/ dont even know about.
Result Pre-Mod
Reacting to this, sometimes over the mark, othertimes funny
Result Month Ban
Crikey, looks like the Eds have been taking justice lessons from Guantanamo Bay.

As a couple of people have pointed out, pre-mod wasn't really an option for Hoo so I understand why the eds gave him a ban instead, but I don't see why they didn't apply the same sanction to Apple too.
I'm still asking: Anyone else? There were more than two protagonists here...

Well yes, I kind of expected (and feared) some kind of sanction myself.
NOTE: That is not saying I want this to happen.

Arnie Appleaide - Inspector General of the Defenders of Freedom Posted May 20, 2005
Ferretbadger, I agree with your assesment of the unfairness.
One difference though is that Hoo took the fight to the moderators, which I'm betting (without evidence) that Apple did not. Now, although it appears to us sometimes that the mods are all-powerful and knowing, they aren't. So although we'd like them to dispense justice as if from this stance, they can't - they need to take into account attacks on their Sovereignty, so to speak. That's what it looks happened, to me now, after reading various backlogs.

Mikey, I am surprised that azahar chose to post here, a carefully edited version of one of precisely two emails I have sent her since December! Mind you, it all aids her campaign to blacken my name and reputation! I of course, would never do the same to her, which is why I am at a distinct disadvantage...
There is of course no "hate mail" that "just keeps on coming" - do you think I'd dare do any such thing, in the current climate of hate mongering that exists against me and my family - oh, and anyone I have ever exchanged a kind word, or a word of agreement with?

If I'm to be perfectly honest I'm not surprised that Hoo has fallen foul of the mods. I've seen a couple of displays of 24 Carat trolling from him in the past.

Yes, and this is my first 'reply' if you will. I have never posted anything from those emails on hootoo previously. As I stated, I just wanted to give you all an idea of what I've been putting up with as I have sometimes been called unreasonable.
The email address she uses is the one I have posted on h2g2 for the photo gallery - I have never given my personal email address to her.
At first her emails were not objectionable - though they were sometimes weird. Those I replied to. Then they became progressively more aggressive, then abusive - and then I stopped replying. But the emails didn't stop.

Don't you have a function on your email to block specific addresses, if it bothers you to that degree? Even hotmail can do that.

I used to work as door security, my job was to make sure that none of the establishment rules were broken and that everyone was safe etc...
Now there were three of us guys doing this job in a pub that held around 200 people. We'd have been at it all night if we turfed out everyone who broke the no smoking or dringking on the dance floor rule. Or searched everyone for weapons so we diddnt we searched for obvious things like basebal bats by looking under long coats and reminded people of the rules for the dance floor.
The one thing certain to get you immediately turfed out was not showing respect to us or other staff, we didnt want grovelling but if people were getting lippy or ignorant we werent going to take any chances even a little of this attitude got you the boot.
I think this is what's happened here.
