Another source of the money driving organizations like ISIS/ISIL is automated telephone dialing machine scams, always, in recent years, a major outbreak of trouble like that before the emergence of the latest popular front for world terrorism.

I have to agree that the appeal to religion confuses people with respect to the issues of banditry and brigandage versus a government of laws.

It is reaction against the principle of a government of laws driving the popular appeal of organizations like ISIS/ISIL.

Baron, I didn't read the article, for the same reason I don't bother reading Papal encyclicals, Maria's wise summary and conclusion kind of sums it up I reckon, Cheers, HO.

Limpets' teeth replaces spider silk as the hardest substance known to biology:

(but have they tested dried-on Weetabix?)

Apparently they're going to use it for dental fillings, that's Limpets teeth, not dried on Weetabix, wouldn't you think it would make your breath fishy? And how are they going to extract the limpet's teeth? That's a lot of work, take a lot of mussel power presumably.

Maybe they can just winkle them out? That's my last word on this story, but, the Times reports a growing sport in Boston of people somersaulting in their underwear into snowdrifts from upstairs windows. It's called the Boston Blizzard Challenge. The chap who invented it was on a romantic weekend away with his wife, it doesn't report Mrs Grave's reaction, but you have to wonder if she'd given him the cold shoulder. I hope things are starting to thaw out between them.

If it were child porn on a hard drive they'd be able to restore it no problem, despite the best efforts somebody would take to delete it.

I think the police are lying.

The Headline in the Henley Standard this morning is that a forthcoming Michael McIntyre concert at the local theatre sold out in 30 seconds!!! Oh they're really cutting edge in good old Henley, when Jimmy Cricket comes to town they'll have to erect barricades!

This is one of many that caught my eye today: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-devon-31636846

A Devon councillor moved to France a few months ago when their partner got a job just over the channel.

According to all reports, they're still doing a good job and are a good councillor. But the opposition are calling it an insult to the constituency, and to democracy no less. But does it matter though? They're only 150 miles away, less than a lot of UK based MPs lives from their constituents. Would it be the same problem if they lived in London? Or in Manchester? Both of which are further away. Is it because they're now resident in France? Are the opposition showing their xenophobic tendencies?

quotes

16 year old youth breaks into a house, and his friend gets shot dead by the householder. If this was in the UK, the householder might be in court defending himself on a manslaughter charge, but this happened in Indiana, which by contrast means the youth gets the blame.
He gets locked up for 55 years.

Re Pastey's post - there's a difference between an MP and a councillor though. An MP is elected to represent constituents in Westminster, which may be hundreds of miles away. It's his/her job to see his constituent's needs and wants are represented there. A councillor is expected to deal with local matters within the constituency and a degree of local knowledge and experience is required. Frankly I'd be unimpressed if my councillor lived in the next council district, far less a different country.
