A little after midnight the New Year's artillery (fireworks) started here in Edmonton. I expect, based on the number of Team Canada jerseys I've seen on people in the last week, that much of the city was celebrating a hockey team rather than the flipping of a calendar.

I must admit though, I'd find the whole thing more shocking if this wasn't to be only the second time they've done it... big companies chop and change their charidee giving all the time.

Yes. And Great Big Companies can be a lot more supportive to minorities than small ones; they are often the least-worst option for trans people on their journey through gender reassignment for example.
