I was never under the impression that each news item was meant to be a comment on the preceding item.smiley - erm

What does hoo's story from yesterday about increased speedlimits have to do with Pink Paisley's story from the day before about Prince Philip?

No, I expect you're right: he's just raving.

Of course, hoo might be concerned about your welfare.

I mean, you don't want a coachload of fanatics camped outside your front gate, swaying while mumbling arcane scriptures - or, more likely, bitterly complaining that the layout of garden is an insult to their sensibilities and an affront to the almighty. smiley - tongueout

I'm not "raving" smiley - huh

I've just observed that there are groups one is well advised not to criticise.

In other news, a wonderful demonstration of multiculturalism in action. Note the police acting sensitively, not stopping and searching anyone for possession of a knife in case they're accused or racism or something.

Good lord! Where's my truncheon.
Are those people stupid or just ignorant of the law.

I have never seen such deliberate refusals to follow
the directions of a peace office. What is the point
of resisting an instruction to stand back and allow
medical attendants to do their job? This was not a
protest march. The instructions were not personal.

Good thing I'm not a copper. There'da been a lot of
cracked skulls. And the rest would get the message.

Thanks for the clarification. Rave on!
But bear in mind that some context is often helpful
especially when many are sensitive to what can be
seen at face value as vaguely threatening comments.

I'm curious what world-view is required to imagine I'm in a position to *threaten* someone.

"Be careful", in the context of a piece of text addressed from one fairly anonymous person to another similarly anonymous person who is, as far as I'm aware, on another continent, is surely only interpretable as friendly advice except by the clinically paranoid?

Psychotic I may be, psychic I'm not. How could I, even in principle, *threaten* someone whose name, location, age and even gender I don't have any concrete knowledge or evidence of?

I realise Hoo-bashing is a popular sport among a few on here nowadays (how could I not?), but trying to imply that "be careful" is a threat is scraping the barrel. I mean come on - I was quite obviously being anti-semitic, implying that if people carry on posting critical things like that, the worldwide conspiracy of Jews will get them.

just to play smiley - devil's avocado:

surely the word 'threaten' does not necessarily
imply the actual ability to carry out the
threat. If a legless and armless knight
says he is going to chew on an able-bodied
knight's ankle, even though the able-bodied
knight is on the other side of a forest glade,
far beyond his reach, it is still a threat,
isn't it? If not, why do we have the term in
English 'empty threat'?

Sorry, been busy with a complicated bit of poetry.

I agree, hoo, it's ridiculous to imagine any *real* threat in such a place as this high tech telegraph.smiley - smiley

I also found it ridiculous to imagine a warning to be careful about the news story to which I linked. As I said, I didn't understand why you were warning me or threatening me or whatever it was you were doing by telling me to 'be careful' about a widely reported news story to which I linked without comment. The only reason I mentioned 'threat' was because it struck me as being as absurd as 'warning'.

I hope that clears that up.smiley - smiley

And, I'll assume unless you correct me that your "I was quite obviously being anti-semitic . . ." was a reference to some sort of odd bit of irony or something. I confess, I haven't got a clue what your point, obvious though it may have been to you, was.smiley - huh

In any case . . .

a nasty bit of spitting in Israel that was, wasn't it?smiley - erm

Sorry to have come out of hiding and linked to something that's been all over the news -- where I am, at least.

Happy holidays.

Yes, it was a nasty case of spitting in Israel.

And that was "all over the news"? A man was stabbed to death in a crowded shopping street in London the day after Christmas, apparently in a fight over trainers. Another man was shot in the head in an apparently unprovoked handgun attack in the nearest large city to my home.

And Jews spitting at other Jews is the big story. That and "rich old Greek man goes to hospital, doesn't die". smiley - sadface
