Not to fret, Granny. Folk dress for how much they have to move out there. When everyone was 'fishing,' the girls could wear stilettos and poodle skirts. But when you have to cut loose and shake your stuff, you have to show some lines and be able to keep your balance.

From Joni Mitchell 'Come in From The Cold':

'...Way back in 1957, We had to dance a foot apart And they hawk-eyed us From the sidelines Holding their rulers without a heart And so with just a touch of our fingers We could make our circuitry explode Oh all we ever wanted Was to come in from the cold...' smiley - winkeye

A little before my time, but I can relate.

We haven't talked yet about really really short mini-skirts. Whew, those were really tough to move around in. And sitting down was fraught with peril. I mean the point was not to look like a total freak by having your entire skirt ride up onto your waist like a cummerband.

OK, here's another one: bell bottoms, the really extreme variety. Every step you take, one legs whallops the other with flying fabric. And, if you have to walk through snow, the fabric will fill up with water and drag you down like anchor in the ocean. Ani.

Hi again Granny. I went to your space and learned that Robert (Percy) Plant had brushed against you in a bar. Mick Jagger brushed against me at the SARSfest concert. It was kind of like the King's anointing of bygone days. Ani. smiley - smiley

smiley - laugh Back in the 60's (told you I was old smiley - smiley) a couple of friends and I were walking to a Stones concert when a limo drew up at the traffic lights alongside us.

It was the Stones on their way to the concert. Brian Jones was leaning on the window nearest me, fast asleep or something smiley - erm and as we went to knock on the window - as you would - Mick asked us not to in sign language smiley - smiley. We stepped back & Mick & Bill blew us kisses smiley - yikes

I am really amazed that you saw Brian Jones. He and Keith did a lot of edgy guitar stuff back then. I had a chance to see Hendrix, but blew it; then he was dead. Ani.

Ha! Granny! I checked your wedding pix out on your space! You're the one in the pink. I took one look at the one in pink and said to myself, she's been on a bike. Hey, I'm not a biker but had a friend for a long time who was a biker. Bikers just stand a certain way. They have an air about them. Now that we are on the subject of bikes, what do you think would be particularly nasty to wear on a bike? Ani.

Which is a pity, because long skirts are so smiley - cool and they look good, as well.

abbi normal "Putting on the Ritz" with Dr Frankenstein

Yep I have had troubles with kimono sleeves ,bell bottoms and elastic waisted skirts too.
*plenty dangerous and clumsy without the clothes*

They are not clothes but fashions; hoop earings and other jewelry can be painfully caught or yanked off.

kea ~ Far out in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the western spiral arm of the Galaxy lies a small, unregarded but very well read blue and white website

This is such a classic h2 thread. I hope no-one offsite is reading though because it is very strange to watch a bunch of people discuss dangerous clothing...

Synthetic nighties next to open fires or heaters, especially on children. There was a TV campaign on this when I was growing up to warn parents.

Anything long or dangly while using a wringer washing machine.

Anything that exposes more of the body than the head, hands or feet in the NZ summer (we're under the Ozone hole). Actually it's a good idea to wear a hat too.

Jandals while driving.

Wearing shorts (those short gapey ones) while driving and smoking and trying to throw the cigarette out the window. The driver happened to be male and we just about pissed ourselves laughing despite the imminent danger of driving off the road.

I know someone who was hitchhiking wearing a leather jacket and got picked up so the driver could rob him of the jacket.

Even worse - ties in shredders.

Though I must say I've never understood the use of ties.

Short gapey shorts. Yes, I had forgotten the dangers of those. I have become very selective about shorts.

Here's another one: a poncho in a high wind. As a youngster I hitchhiked with my cousin from Jasper to Ottawa. 'Hitchhike' is a bit of an exaggeration. Some mounted police on vacation picked us up and 'protected' us all the way home. Anyway, Cousin was kneehigh to a grasshopper and weighed about 90 lbs at the time. The wind was very very high, she was wearing a poncho, and I had to hold on to her for dear life to prevent her from being blown down the highway. Pretty funny. smiley - biggrin (She didn't think so) smiley - erm Ani.

Hi Az

I think mini skirts and high boots were definitely "Life threatening clothing" - paticualry for male drivers !!!!! smiley - winkeyesmiley - winkeye

hi mike,

Well, since mini-skirts were first in fashion when I was about 10-12 years old (and I wore them even though I was way too fat to!) I doubt I ever caused any road accidents myself.

I also remember having a pair of white go-go boots when I was nine years old - sad, sad . . . smiley - biggrin

But the new hipsters (I remember these first when I was 14) are really, um, quite eye-catching sometimes. I mean, I'm a woman who doesn't find other women sexually attractive per se, but sometimes I wonder why they are bothering to wear anything at all with such low-cut and tight hipsters and short crop tops . . . leaving nothing to the imagination at all. And most probably some of them could cause a few minor traffic accidents. smiley - bigeyes

Yes, good point Mike. I dont think we have discussed in any great depth the dangers to others by reason of wearing 'distracting' clothing. Anybody have any experiences? Ani.
