From Canada: Watching Ravens on Manitoulin

I call heaven and earth to witness this day, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing. Choose therefore life, that both thou and thy seed may live...(Deuteronomy 30:19)

Terri Schiavo was a disabled woman whom the Florida courts have ruled must be removed from her feeding tube. On 31 March 2005, the 14th day of starvation and dehydration, she died. Fr Pavone reported that her parents asked to see her 10 minutes before her death, but her husband forbade them access. Likely there will be a huge political fall-out in the United States, in the Catholic Church, and perhaps in many other countries. I will update this personal space from time to time. Thank you for your interest. If you would like to help, quite a few of us are here:

Evidence against husband, judge, and hospice

Hitler signed a document on his personal stationery instructing his assistants Philipp Bouhler and Dr. Karl Brandt to initiate a euthanasia program..

’Reichsleiter Bouhler and Dr. med. Brandt are instructed to broaden the powers of physicians designated by name, who will decide whether those who have — as far as can be humanly determined — incurable illnesses can, after the most careful evaluation, be granted a mercy death. signed Adolf Hitler’.

Daniel Eisenberg, MD writes on the value of life

"As a student Mengele attended the lectures of Dr. Ernst Rudin, who posited not only that there were some lives not worth living, but that doctors had a responsibility to destroy such life and remove it from the general population. His prominent views gained the attention of Hitler himself, and Rudin was drafted to assist in composing the Law for the Protection of Heredity Health, which passed in 1933, the same year that the Nazis took complete control of the German government."

Former Democratic vice presidential candidate Joseph Lieberman: reinsert Terri Schiavo's feeding tube in order to keep her alive. "The fact is that, though I know a lot of people's attitude toward the Schiavo case and other matters is affected by their faith and their sense of what religion tells them about morality, ultimately as members of Congress, as judges, as members of the Florida state Legislature, this is a matter of law. And the law exists to express our values." _or_Die$.asp. /...iavo_spero.php3.

31 March 2005 Statement from Bishop John J. Nevins on the death of Terri Schiavo

Theresa Marie Schiavo has gone home to God. I pray that she has received a warm embrace from the Lord. May she rest in peace.

We all grieve with her family. The death of a spouse or a child is very private because it is the private pain of a family. This was not the case with Terri. We have come to know her and her family as our own. She has become a sister, a daughter, a friend to all of us. We are all in pain.

Last week as we recalled the passion of our Lord, Terri was suffering her own passion. And as the Risen Christ promises a new existence for all of us and a transformation of death into life for all eternity, we know that someday we will see Terri again, all weariness gone, clear of mind, strong and sure, smiling again, and the sorrow of her parting will be gone forever.

I pray that God has welcomed Terri Schiavo and that he will comfort those who loved her.

May we Catholics always uphold the dignity of human life, from the moment of conception until natural death.

Cardinals in United Kingdom Warn About Life Issues

In Britain...writing in the Telegraph newspaper today, Cardinal Murphy-O'Connor, deplored "[the] terrible truth that it is the strong who decide the fate of the weak." He added: "Human beings therefore become instruments of other human beings. That way lies eugenics, and we know from German history where that leads..."Life is also...vulnerable as one approaches death," he said.

"In recent days we have seen the case of the brain-damaged American woman Terri Schiavo whose parents have filed an emergency appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court, as they fight to keep their daughter alive. Mrs. Schiavo, had her feeding tube removed last week, and is currently dehydrating and starving to death as legal battles rage around her."

Earlier this week, Bishop Elio Sgreccia, president of the Pontifical Academy for Life, said this action, was "an illicit and grave act not only on the fact that food has been taken away from her, but also on the decision that tries to legitimize such a thing."

Question and Answer: Summary of Catholic teaching

Pope John Paul II: "I should like particularly to underline how the administration of water and food, even when provided by artificial means, always represents a natural means of preserving life, not a medical act."

Human Life International condemns Whittemore judicial decision

March 28: Catholic Cardinal Theodore E. McCarrick of Washington, appearing on ABC's "This Week," called the court orders enabling Mr. Schiavo to starve his wife to death "euthanasia." The church "would say, 'You cannot do that. You cannot take a life,' "he said.

Archbishop Michael Sheehan: "We're called to provide basic means of sustenance, such as food and water, unless they're doing more harm than good to the patient, or unless the patient's death is imminent. And her death is not imminent."

Most Reverend Joseph A. Galante, D.D., J.C.D., Bishop of Camden: We start with the principle that all life is not only worthwhile, but is sacred and has dignity, not because of some kind of human determination, but because God has created it and has created it in his own image. For this reason, it is never acceptable to deliberately cause the death of a human person, whether it is through an act of commission or omission. But what are our obligations when a person is in a persistent unconscious state? If a person is on the verge of death because of a particular condition, it is morally licit to refuse extraordinary medical treatment that would prolong the person’s life, so long as normal care to the person (such as nutrition and hydration) is continued. Conversely, it is not morally permissible to deny normal care (food and water) to a person who is not in danger of imminent death due to an underlying medical condition in order to bring about the person’s death or to accelerate it because one is frustrated at the perceived quality of that person’s life or the pace of that the person’s demise.

Mel Gibson: "It's a precedent that they set...We'll see worse than this."

Protestants in Terri's corner:

Consumer advocate Ralph Nader says that Terri's case will be used by the eugenics and euthanasia movement to justify HMOs' cutting costs by exterminating the infirm and disabled who are just too expensive to keep alive. This will be used to support their cost benefit analysis and treatment of human beings as chattel.

Killing 'non-persons' in order to harvest organs: Wesley Smith

Some of the same bioethicists who have been telling us how right and moral it is to dehydrate Terri Schiavo have also urged that people like Terri — that is, human non-persons — be harvested or otherwise used as mere instrumentalities. Bioethicist big-wig Tom Beauchamp of Georgetown University has suggested that "because many humans lack properties of personhood or are less than full persons, they…might be aggressively used as human research subjects or sources of organs." Empire Journal: Dehydration causes false results on brain autopsy l_exami.htm

"According to information obtained by The Empire Journal from medical professionals. It has been found that extreme dehydration causes substantial shrinkage of brain tissue which threatens to skew the medical examiner findings at any autopsy of Terri Schiavo...It is likely that Felos and Michael Schiavo have been informed of this and hope the dehydration will help them lend even more disinformation toward their cause that Terri has ‘severe cortical atrophy’.

In studies of hydrocephalus patients, there is evidence that brain size is not related to intelligence. In the prestigious magazine, Science, in December, 1980, and more recently in a PBS documentary, the work of Dr. John Lorber of Sheffield University, England, is reported. Of the more than 600 individuals examined by Dr. Lorber, about one in 10 had more than 90% of the skull volume filled with fluid, and of these more than half of these have IQs over 100.

One young man examined by Dr. Lorber, who was then a student at Sheffield University, had a measured IQ of 126, a first class honors degree in mathematics and virtually no brain. This student’s brain cortex is a layer about 1/25th of an inch (1mm) thick, lining his skull. His brain weight is estimated to be about 2/10 of one pound (about 0.090 kg). That is only about 7% of normal brain weight."

Injury Report Prompted Schiavo Cremation Plans? Nurses muzzled?

"He immediately went to court and [said he] wanted her body cremated at that time," nurse Carla Sauer Iyer said, "after we got hold of the records that proved there were dislocations and fractures." A 1991 report on a bone scan performed on Terri Schiavo states: "There are an extensive number of focal abnormal areas ... These include: multiple bilateral ribs ... both sacroiliac joints ... both knees and both ankles." Radiographs reveal "compression fractures" of the spine and right femur...presumably traumatic," the report says.

Mary Laybak, CEO of Woodside Hospice has direct ties to Euthanasia Society of America and Hemlock for Hospice, an organization that seeks to accelerate the dying process. Federal funds may not be used for these purposes.

The Hospice is a federally funded program designed for terminally ill and those whose death is eminent. Terri has been in Woodside Hospice illegally for three years under Medicaid payments, courtesy of George Felos. Felos arranged with Michael Schiavo to arrange for Terri’s free stay at Hospice Woodside as part of an 'exit protocol designed to advance Felos’ messianic (he hears voices) mission of 'helping' incapacitated people to die by categorizing them as 'terminal, warehousing them, and depriving them of therapy and rehabilitation services.

US Dept of Health and Human Services is currently trying to collect $14.8 million from Florida Suncoast Hospice, owed to them since 1997. The Hospice is accused of patient brokering and several lawsuits filed by Attorney Jonathan Alpert are pending.
