INTRODUCTION:

Terri Schiavo was a disabled woman whom the Florida courts have ruled must be removed from her feeding tube. On 31 March 2005, the 14th day of starvation and dehydration, she died. Fr Pavone reported that her parents asked to see her 10 minutes before her death, but her husband forbade them access. Likely there will be a huge political fall-out in the United States, in the Catholic Church, and perhaps in many other countries. I will update this personal space from time to time. 31 March 2005 Statement from Bishop John J. Nevins on the death of Terri Schiavo

Theresa Marie Schiavo has gone home to God. I pray that she has received a warm embrace from the Lord. May she rest in peace.

We all grieve with her family. The death of a spouse or a child is very private because it is the private pain of a family. This was not the case with Terri. We have come to know her and her family as our own. She has become a sister, a daughter, a friend to all of us. We are all in pain.

Last week as we recalled the passion of our Lord, Terri was suffering her own passion. And as the Risen Christ promises a new existence for all of us and a transformation of death into life for all eternity, we know that someday we will see Terri again, all weariness gone, clear of mind, strong and sure, smiling again, and the sorrow of her parting will be gone forever.

I pray that God has welcomed Terri Schiavo and that he will comfort those who loved her.

May we Catholics always uphold the dignity of human life, from the moment of conception until natural death.

In Britain...writing in the Telegraph newspaper today, Cardinal Murphy-O'Connor, deplored "[the] terrible truth that it is the strong who decide the fate of the weak." He added: "Human beings therefore become instruments of other human beings. That way lies eugenics, and we know from German history where that leads..."Life is also...vulnerable as one approaches death," he said.

"In recent days we have seen the case of the brain-damaged American woman Terri Schiavo whose parents have filed an emergency appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court, as they fight to keep their daughter alive. Mrs. Schiavo, had her feeding tube removed last week, and is currently dehydrating and starving to death as legal battles rage around her."

Earlier this week, Bishop Elio Sgreccia, president of the Pontifical Academy for Life, said this action, was "an illicit and grave act not only on the fact that food has been taken away from her, but also on the decision that tries to legitimize such a thing."

For this reason, it is never acceptable to deliberately cause the death of a human person, whether it is through an act of commission or omission. But what are our obligations when a person is in a persistent unconscious state? If a person is on the verge of death because of a particular condition, it is morally licit to refuse extraordinary medical treatment that would prolong the person’s life, so long as normal care to the person (such as nutrition and hydration) is continued. Conversely, it is not morally permissible to deny normal care (food and water) to a person who is not in danger of imminent death due to an underlying medical condition in order to bring about the person’s death or to accelerate it because one is frustrated at the perceived quality of that person’s life or the pace of that the person’s demise.

In studies of hydrocephalus patients, there is evidence that brain size is not related to intelligence. In the prestigious magazine, Science, in December, 1980, and more recently in a PBS documentary, the work of Dr. John Lorber of Sheffield University, England, is reported. Of the more than 600 individuals examined by Dr. Lorber, about one in 10 had more than 90% of the skull volume filled with fluid, and of these more than half of these have IQs over 100.

One young man examined by Dr. Lorber, who was then a student at Sheffield University, had a measured IQ of 126, a first class honors degree in mathematics and virtually no brain. This student’s brain cortex is a layer about 1/25th of an inch (1mm) thick, lining his skull. His brain weight is estimated to be about 2/10 of one pound (about 0.090 kg). That is only about 7% of normal brain weight."

Mary Laybak, CEO of Woodside Hospice has direct ties to Euthanasia Society of America and Hemlock for Hospice, an organization that seeks to accelerate the dying process. Federal funds may not be used for these purposes.

The Hospice is a federally funded program designed for terminally ill and those whose death is eminent. Terri has been in Woodside Hospice illegally for three years under Medicaid payments, courtesy of George Felos. Felos arranged with Michael Schiavo to arrange for Terri’s free stay at Hospice Woodside as part of an 'exit protocol designed to advance Felos’ messianic (he hears voices) mission of 'helping' incapacitated people to die by categorizing them as 'terminal, warehousing them, and depriving them of therapy and rehabilitation services.

US Dept of Health and Human Services is currently trying to collect $14.8 million from Florida Suncoast Hospice, owed to them since 1997. The Hospice is accused of patient brokering and several lawsuits filed by Attorney Jonathan Alpert are pending.
