Went to see Monsters University on Saturday (at the weekend £1 kids film screening). It was quite fun.
Planning to see Planes this weekend via the same method.

I went to see "Captain Phillips" last night.
The pirates board the ship about 45 minutesi nto the film. That was when I exited the theater.

Two films in the last few days.
Pacific Rim - a triumph of CGI over plot, dialogue, acting and credibility. Silly, just silly. So many films like these getting made only because CGI makes it cheap enough to do so. CGI when used to enhance a film alongside a great plot, script and actors (I. Robot) is fantastic. With Pacific Rim (and another film I watched recently that I wiped from my memory as the credits rolled), the CGI is just froth on the drivel.
The World's End - I used to quite like Simon Pegg, then he ruined Star Trek. Shaun of the Dead was truly funny, Hot Fuzz was quite amusing, Run Fatboy Run looked a bit tired and now The World's End. I usually steer clear of films "written by", "produced by" and "starring" the same person (think of Steven Seagal) because they're usually just an ego trip for the "star". And that's all The World's End is, an unfunny vehicle for Simon Gurning Pegg to make sure the camera very rarely gets switched on unless he's front and centre.
Bugger. Is there anything actually worth watching that isn't an American TV Drama?

I've actually seen four of the five Simon Pegg films you mentioned, swl. I've never come that close to being on the same page as other researchers.
"Pacific Rim" didn't break new ground in terms of plot or characterization. It just ramped up the violence thanks to CGI. It was what you'd get if Iron Man met Godzilla [or Gojira].

We watched Twister last night. We were hoping for another Volcano. There were about 20 hilarious minutes towards the end but apart from that it was dire.
Except of course for Westley playing an evil meteorologist.

I remember hearing Edith Piaf sing "La vie en rose" every day in the language lab when I was in high school. After a while, one gets tired of hearing a song so often. Still, Piaf was one of only a very few French singers who were known outside of their own country. Maurice Chevalier and [perhaps] Johnny Hallyday come to mind, but few others.

Saw that classic fight between Mick McManus and Slasher Distel on the ITV wrestling programme in the 70s. Bit of a one-sided fight, but Slasher did lead the crowd in a wonderfully Gallic "God Save Ze Queen" at the side of the ring.

Last night I saw "The Fifth Estate." I was pleased to notice that I had read one of the two books that the film was based on. I wonder what Assange thinks of Cumberbatch's portrayal of him.

We went to see Sunshine on Leith on Tuesday. I'm still singing the tunes! Although the promotion "this year's Mamma Mia" almost put me off, I'm glad I went to see it. Ian hadn't seen the Abba-fest so went in to this with no issues. We both enjoyed it, I swear I spotted my friend who moved to Scotland in the 70s in the Scollywood finale.

Apparently Assange refused to meet with Cumberbatch about the role. Which, if true, is pretty shitty.

It was predictable, though. Assange comes across as someone who has serious trust issues.

Thor 2. Dumb as a sack of rocks but really funny, helped in no small part by the superb chemistry between the cast. It's really quite self-referential but they manage to stay just on the right side and stop it from being pretentious/smug.
It seems to be the year for Skarsgard full-on nudity. Great legs in that family.

I saw "20 feet From Stardom" the other night and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was delightful from beginning to end. It was about great singers who work as backup singers, but have the talent to be headliners themselves.
