btw, someone was asking earlier how you end up being able to hand out invites... so... er... how *do* you end up being able to hand out invites?
My main interest in getting in early on this was to get a good 'straight' web-mail address - I was far to late to get my own name on hotmail.
One downside, I guess, is that I use Messenger and that has the bonus of telling you if you have new mail...
I don't want to have to desert Messenger (or rather I don't want everyone else I know to have to), so I'm worried that the Gmail will just be superfluous...
still, i'm there now, so I'll be able to see how it pans out, I guess
thanks very much, anyhoo,

Apparently you just have to wait and see Spiff.
Rocket Man, my son just sent you a begging letter. I hope you don't mind. (We were hoping to be able to get sensible names too)

The invite for your son has been sent, Tefkat.
Kudos goes to Spiff for noticing the Withnail and I quote
Three invites left.

Oh this sounds like a neat promotional scheme. Using a chain-mail pyramid system to recruit new users!
I have been looking forward to seeing Google's promised 'bigger and better' G-mail and hope to get in on the action.
But... I am in Canada, so before I ask anyone to send one to the e-mail link on my homepage let me ask if it has clearly been established that this is for UK postal codes only.
Lucky Star mentioned this problem on page one of this thread but I saw no further discussion. Then about 60 posts later LS is announcing she'd finally set up a G-mail account...
I'm confused.

It didn't ask for owt like postcodes John. Just name, password and the security question in case you forget the password.
I finally have some invites to send so look out for an email from me.

Anyone can have a gmail address, jwf. You don't have to supply any RL address, google has no idea where you reside. Lots of us in the US have them, but I got mine from a Brit. Would you like me to send you one now?

Thanks Witty but it looks like tefkat has managed to get her generous offer posted here first, so I'll hope you'll save yours for the next guy. Good to know that it's available 'everywhere' and 'anywhere'.

I seem to have dished all mine out in record time (apart from the one earmarked for povvie). Wonder whether they send you more for good behaviour

My "UK postcodes" difficulty was with the Super-duper Hotmail.
Gmail has posed no problems at all so far, and I'm loving the "search the archive" function.

So I have to ask, what search engine did you use to find that page!

I don't like that system as anyone could enter their address to open a whole load of accounts to spam or generally be anti-social about the whole issue.
I preferred the swap system I saw a while ago where they sent you an invite and you then gave some money to charity/promised to use less electricity/bought fairtrade for a week/wash the neighbours car...

I have some spares now if anyone would like one. You don't have to promise to wash the neighbours' car. Just don't kick their for a week or two.
