A Motto for Britain
~ jwf ~ scribblo ergo sum Posted Sep 27, 2007
I've actually been giving this motto business some thought, probably far more than it deserves.
The social changes from a print-oriented nationalistic society to a web-based multiculture makes any attempt to use old 'Latin' style slogans and sluglines vulnerable to the pace of fast changing fashions. And any 'new' ideas will be seen as an affront to tradition.
So how about this compromise:
"Britannia Rules!"

'Sodomy rules...the country where its citizens lets the government butt-f**k them at every opportunity and although they hate it do nothing about it.'
Long but accurate.

You've really got it into your head that Scotland's going to be independent in a few years haven't you? Seriously, why do you think this?

Because the English have got it into their heads they would be better off without Scotland ??
Seriously, I dearly hope it doesn't come to pass.

There was an interesting discussion about it on 'This Week' on thursday. dianne Abbot said she felt mostly British. Michael Portillo said he felt both English and British, more or less equally. There were two Scots on the programme, who said they felt that 'Britain' would probably last for about another 30 years. I think I agree with them. They spoke about how the whole idea and concept of 'Britain' was very much connected with Empire which is now irrelevant. but these things take some time to actually change, especially in Britain.
I know I tease you about it SWL. But I'm quite torn deep down. As I think a lot of English are.
