I was meaning Darth Vader, Kerr.

Err, Dave Prowse is a bloody great white guy! I don't think you can really count the fact that James Earl Jones did the voice, because you can't tell race from voice.

Didn't you used to be "Della the cat woman"? or are we all confusing you with someone else?

What do you mean you know I read Ron Hubbard? I tried to read Battlefield Earth when the movie came out, but I couldn't get past chapter 2 - and unlike with others, I will not persist with him.
As for saying Le Guin was boring, that was by no means my only problem with her, but that's all I want to say at this time of night.
Hoo has issues, what can I say?

Yes Ben she did used to be Della.

I think alot of people have been wondering that for along time .

Is Dave Prowse the actor who plays the body of DV?
I wasn't meaning him I was meaning the character DV (not the actor who played him).

Never said there was, dear, never said there was. I never minded when people still call me 'a girl called Ben' even though it is a handle I dropped over a year ago.
>> Hoo has issues
Course he does. It is what makes a thread with him in such a compelling spectator sport. It is the best fun when he isn't the only one in the thread with issues, though.
You said you had other problems with LeGuin - I am curious to know what they are, in a non-evangelical spirit of curiousity you understand.

My mistake then (I thought you had said that somewhere).

Dave Prowse was forbidden to do the voice of Darth Vader (and is all these years later still justly angry about it) because he is a Northerner and so didn't sound "British enough" to Americans. (The old Hollywood convention of the British villain. I have asked Americans what that's about and have never had an explanation.)
Another example is Star Trek: Generations which we saw tonight. The villain, Tolian Soran is an alien - but he still has to sound British. What's that about?

Yes.
>I wasn't meaning him I was meaning the character DV
But the character of Darth Vader is white too. He's the grown-up Anakin Skywalker, who is white. We even get to see his face at the end of Return of the Jedi, and it's white.

Yes, but in Star Wars (the original film) he _looks_ BLACK, which is the criteria that I got from H.'s post.

Hi, Ben. I don't mind some people still calling me Della, but Hoo does it to p*ss me off, and because he knows (and was probably responsible for) me having to change...
As for Le Guin, I'll say more about that later - meantime, it's 0221 hours (a.m.) here and I must away to my bed, as Janet McPherson used to say in Doctor Finlay's Bookcase.

Dave Prowse is *not* a northerner. He's from Bristol, and has one of those comic 'oi'm a zider drinker oi am' accents. It wasn't a case of 'not sounding British enough', more being impossible to take seriously. A Darth Vader with an accent like that would sound like he ought to be sitting on a tractor, not building a death star.

I was going to post something a little bitter. It began with:
I'm really sorry to have started this.
Then came the bitter stuff. I think I'll leave it out. It was mostly about some of the explicitly nasty bits that Tolkien put into some of his work. No point in stirring it up anymore.
You guys have fun with the Star Wars and Star Trek stuff.
