That's something completely different. And here you are, condoning illegal activity.
This is the official, legal option. You're being offered on a plate, a fully functional computer, yet you want to stick with a piece of junk such as the digibox.

Oh, and by the way - you won't get any hacker to hack the firewall. You just can't do that. Especially when by 'hacker' you mean someone who knows a bit of HTML...

How about Seraphina? For the chosen assembled/donated computer...

Right considering it took me 5 attempts to post tonight due to server errors, I am reverting everyones atention back to post 19
How are we going to do it?

Kilted, I think once recipients are found then the how will become more apparent (depending on where they are etc).
I've started posting a link to this thread on the pages of people who might be interested in the gear, or people who might know people who need a computer. I'll also post on the De Myelin Nation page.
Saturnine, do you want to post on Serephina's page or will I?
And are there criteria? Digi users who will have difficulty accessing h2g2 via cafe/library computers etc, with preference to those with disability?
kea.

Saturnine Posted Feb 14, 2004
I don't think there should be criteria. I just think that if Seraphina wants it, she should have first dibs...
And you post. No one likes me much right now.

I still think we should have a central guide entry for this. Outlining the goal and what is involved for everyone. I am quite happy to donate kit but if I have to pay over £5 for delivery then I feel that I am being taken for a ride, especially if I am giving away the hardware in the first place.
( I am still thinking about donating the PC I had lined up as my firewall/sandbox/smtp/iis server)

I'll post on Serephina's page.
Kilted, I'm sure that anyone receiving a free comupter will be happy to pay for shipping, or find some way of getting it delivered
A central guide entry might be a good idea. It's still early days though. Would it be good to wait and see how much interest there is? Or do people see this as an ongoing project that will last beyond the current digibox issue?

I see it as the start of the hootoo exchange and mart.
Recycling old things?
Why restrict it to computeer equipment?

I don't see why not, then keep the thing alive, get something valuable to the community and lasting out of this whole episode

That's a really great idea KJ!!!! There would have to be rules of course - like no money should be involved besides postage, and no adult material etc. But it sounds great to me. After all, that is how I got my computer.

OK we keep it low key for now, just sort out ex-digiboxers that need PC's /special hardware for now, but once that is acomplished, we open up the H2G2 Market Place, where a Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster can be Exchanged for a Heart of Gold

All good. All helpful. aka and Saturnine, remember some will find your contributions to the thread a problem. Not that you shouldn't contribute, but just be aware that some will have a problem. I know you know, now you know I know...and we know.
As to a central location to send things to, do we really need that? It would mean that one or two researchers would have to accept and store it all. Can't individuals contact individuals? Just a thought.

Loup Dargent Posted Feb 14, 2004
kea for the link by the way...
A central location might add some cost to the forwarding of the stuff i think [i might be wrong though]... While some posts of distributions in various areas would help the local digibox users who are willing to upgrade to a PC in those areas to collect it... Or, in the case of Researchers with disabilities, it would be easier to deliver it...
Then again, it might still be a problem for those who don't live near those distribution posts...
Hmmmm... I don't know really...
Anyway, i will post the link to this thread tomorrow/today...
loup
PS: Could we stay away from the "legal/illegal" debate on this thread please?!... What is offered here is a great opportunity [] but we should not tell people what to do... If they want to keep using the digibox it is _their_ choice... If they choose to upgrade to a PC it also has to be _their_ choice, not because they have been told to do so... [My ]

Can the BBC help? As a point of collection and prop off,
Don’t they have offices in most big city’s?
Key: Complain about this post
