Clearly I have been misunderstood.

In saying that I had been introduced to riffraff, I wasn't referring to anyone in this thread. I was referring to the jerks who were flaming Saturnine and aka's Upages, posting inane postings and generally being offensive. You all have been civilly debating the situation, and I apologize if I have caused offense. I really didn't mean you were riffraff!

And, for the record, the riffraff weren't aka's friends. They were angry digiboxers without manners. So, the smiley - footinmouth isn't for me.

In any case, this thread has apparently ceased to be a discussion thread and has turned into a chat room, which is something I do not like. Therefore, I shall take my leave and bid you all good chatting.

Re post 762.The ""angry digiboxers without manners"that you seem to be reffering to.I wonder if anyone has given much thought to the fact that when all this "rudeness" was going on,there WERE NO digibox users on the site.....the link had been closed smiley - weird. As i stated in an earlier post,i have posted on my journal only up to now,but i think that it is time some serious thought was given to the whole subject.IF someone other than telewest was capable of giving digibox users a link to the site ,then surely someone with an equal amount of tehnical knowledge was capable of closing it?????? Telewest have claimed to know nothing about the link ,or indeed it's closure.

smiley - headhurts If we discuss the issue and the events related to the closure of the digibox access [and there are still some issues that needs to be tackle by the way]we are boring and in danger of giving a bad image of the site to the newbies...

smiley - space If we try to make this thread more fun [by making fun of ourselves in the process] so that any nasty posts are buried in the backlog and newbies won't see them, we transform it into a chat room?!...

Thanks for clarifying smiley - ok

It's fine for you to not enjoy the current 'chat' as you put it, and to leave the thread. However I do detect a level of judgement here and I am wondering if you missed what happened? Humour is one of the mainstays of this community and I doubt that h2 would survive without it. The riffraff theme was an opportunity too good to miss, and it enabled researchers to find a balance with some of the other kinds of posting in this thread.

Personally I was finding the amount of people coming along and wanting the thread to close ridiculous. Meeting that with more ridiculousness seems entirely appropriate to me. Anyone that posts something that is new to me, or bears responding to then I will stop riffraffing and respond.

The irony of you (and others) posting that those abusing Sat and aka are riffraff seems to be lost on you.

Personally I haven't seen alot of abuse of Sat and aka. The bits I have seen were mostly in the context of rude and inflammatory posts by Sat and aka themselves. In situations like that it is very hard to tell who started what.

Most of the anger I saw directed at Sat and aka was a result of people not being able to express their opinions and feelings about what Sat and aka had done without getting trashed for it.

That was in the threads I looked at. I am quite willing to accept that there are threads I haven't read that contain abuse of Sat and aka. I'm also willing to bet that Sat and aka were abusive also.

Abusive communication has nothing whatsoever to do with the kind of technology one is using, and has everything to do with one's personal communication skills, emotional maturity, and capacity to manage conflict. It also has a lot to do with intention.

Please stop referring to digi users as a class of people who attacked Sat and aka. There were many different people involved in this conflict, some of whom communicated with care, and others who didn't - on all sides of the argument.

I've said this before, but it bears repeating I think - for me the biggest problem wasn't so much Sat contacting Telewest (although I don't think she should have). It was the total disregard they showed the h2 community in how they went about this and how they managed the subsequent conflict here.

What was particularly appalling for me was Sat's involvement given her place in h2, not only with the support she got when she was computerless herself, but also the huge effort that I have seen many researchers here make to accomodate Sat's personal aggressive style of communication in general (although she has changed this to an extent in recent months).

Abbi made a very good post a handful of pages ago about her disappointment that Sat and aka and others ended up trying to portray Sat and aka as the injured party. I couldn't agree more and I have an incredibly small amount of sympathy for them because of how they went about the whole thing.

A very good summation of how I feel about it, too. It was also partly the way that S&A set themselves up as judge, jury and executioner. I notice that Saturnine appears to be trying to evolve away from her name.

Once again a logical, reasoned thread has become a chat site. No one here has changed their name? No one here knows anything about HTML, Telewest, or what actually happened? If aka or Sat have not been around much it's because of the flaming, trolling, and spamming that hit them. I for one am disgusted that those who make statements like this haven't looked at the backlog. That's right people, it's the backlog. Immutable written words, statements that don't disappear. Have a look, it's enlightening.

Sorry, it's been pointed out to me that I should re-post even thought I have unsubscribed. Your two references to your post seem to indicate you hold those truths dear.

*It's fine for you to not enjoy the current 'chat' as you put it, and to leave the thread. However I do detect a level of judgement here and I am wondering if you missed what happened? Humour is one of the mainstays of this community and I doubt that h2 would survive without it. The riffraff theme was an opportunity too good to miss, and it enabled researchers to find a balance with some of the other kinds of posting in this thread.*

The point was that this isn't a *chat*, it is supposed to be a serious discussion. Turning it into a chat degrades your arguement. I shows you don't care about the subject. Humour is a valuable tool in discussions but is just a way of life in *chat*.

*Personally I was finding the amount of people coming along and wanting the thread to close ridiculous. Meeting that with more ridiculousness seems entirely appropriate to me. Anyone that posts something that is new to me, or bears responding to then I will stop riffraffing and respond.*

I don't see anyone wanting the thread to close, I only see people who want to discuss the original subject.

*The irony of you (and others) posting that those abusing Sat and aka are riffraff seems to be lost on you.*

Your call, not mine.

*Personally I haven't seen alot of abuse of Sat and aka. The bits I have seen were mostly in the context of rude and inflammatory posts by Sat and aka themselves. In situations like that it is very hard to tell who started what.*

Personally I have, and I see it continue. In addition there has been a lot of off site abuse like email spamming and actual threats of physical abuse.

*Most of the anger I saw directed at Sat and aka was a result of people not being able to express their opinions and feelings about what Sat and aka had done without getting trashed for it.*

What kind of circular arguement is that? They did it because they were trashed for doing it??

*That was in the threads I looked at. I am quite willing to accept that there are threads I haven't read that contain abuse of Sat and aka. I'm also willing to bet that Sat and aka were abusive also.*

Show me some. Show me one. I have yet to see Saturnine and aka abusive. They reacted to being attacked and now and then almost lost their tempers. They were yikesed for that and the mod team will decide. Not you.

*Abusive communication has nothing whatsoever to do with the kind of technology one is using, and has everything to do with one's personal communication skills, emotional maturity, and capacity to manage conflict. It also has a lot to do with intention.*

I couldn't agree more, so who are the people who lashed out and attacked?

*Please stop referring to digi users as a class of people who attacked Sat and aka. There were many different people involved in this conflict, some of whom communicated with care, and others who didn't - on all sides of the argument.*

They agreed with the digibox point of view, did they not? Didn't most of them either use a digibox or frequent LD? How many people that just liked conversing with Digibox / LD people attacked, spammed, flammed, trolled?

*I've said this before, but it bears repeating I think - for me the biggest problem wasn't so much Sat contacting Telewest (although I don't think she should have). It was the total disregard they showed the h2 community in how they went about this and how they managed the subsequent conflict here.*

Once again, have a look at the backlog. Sat didn't contact Telewest, aka did. They quite rightly posted a thread to discuss it before aka did it, they didn't act like sock puppets or cowards and just do it anonymously. I admire that and haven't seen the like since.

*What was particularly appalling for me was Sat's involvement given her place in h2, not only with the support she got when she was computerless herself, but also the huge effort that I have seen many researchers here make to accomodate Sat's personal aggressive style of communication in general (although she has changed this to an extent in recent months).*

*aggressive style of communication*? You mean believing in what you say? And the support that was extended to her was extended to the digibox crowd almost immediately. They have many, many options to get back online again.

*Abbi made a very good post a handful of pages ago about her disappointment that Sat and aka and others ended up trying to portray Sat and aka as the injured party. I couldn't agree more and I have an incredibly small amount of sympathy for them because of how they went about the whole thing.*

Well, good for you. I completely, utterly, and diametrically disagree with you.

cl, I hope you check back in because I'd like to ask you a few things. I'm not sure I understand your post that well or who or what it is referring to exactly.

As far as I can remember I've read every post in this thread - I was subscribed from the start. Given that I'm one of the last people to have posted a non 'chat' post here it's hard not to feel like your statements were aimed at me. Is this true?

I feel I have a pretty good understanding of the issue, Telewest, and Sat and aka's involvement. I don't know to what extent HTML is relevant but if it is I'd be interested to hear (I'm guessing that it's to do with the loophole).

I have no problem with you thinking that Sat and aka have been unfairly treated. What I don't understand is why it's not ok for others to disagree with you on that. I'd be interested to know what exactly it is that is the problem (with what Freddy or myself have said today) and would appreciate it if you feel like clarifying.

I am finding tiring the number of people turning up, posting something negative (such as you haven't read the backlog or you'd agree with me type statements), and then unsubscribing. If you truely value "a logical, reasoned thread" why not put your points across and let's debate them?
