Two more from Kent...
A small village called Thong. Is this where they come from?
And south of Canterbury is Pluck's Gutter. Who was Pluck, and what was so unusual about his gutter that they named the village after it?

Giggleswick and its neighbouring town of Wigglesworth are in North Yorkshire.
I can't see how such a location could possibly be the last major settlement to witness a solar eclipse - surely a coastal town would have to qualify.

I can't believe that nobody has looked at a map of East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire.
Here are just a few:
Roos
Wroot
Fridaythorpe
Wetwang
Thorngumbalb
Withernwick
Swine
Thwing
Sewerby
Rascal Moor
Bubwith
Foggathorpe
I saw mention of Toft-next-Newton and Newton-by-Toft. Now a little west of those two in Lincolnshire are Owmby-by-Spital, Normanby-by-Spital and Spital in the Street.
And to round it off near Nottingham is a place called Papplewick which has a tourist attraction (?) called Papplewick Pumping Station.

PS I'll do North Wales another time!

Behind Geddon's wall, The Wall of death! (chemist-assassin, keeper of the hooded swan) Posted Oct 8, 2003
At the risk of being considered picky, and unless the've moved the border of late, Swine is in East Yorkshire, just off the main Hull to Bridlington road. There's also a place in in a valley in Buckinghamshire called HIGH Wycombe, There's also this sleepy little place South of the Border. I think it's called London.

Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwll-llantysiliogogogoch, in North Wales, literally translates as "The Church of St Mary in the hollow of the white hazel near the rapid whirlpool and the church of St Tysilio near a red cave", the most ludicrously descriptive place name I've come across
Key: Complain about this post
