Thank you Diddy! for your explanations which are helping to answer Bob's original question.
Can I say though, that as a well known lurker I first noticed the Leisure District people on h2g2 with the arrival of Jarve, U181758 whose page suggests that this was in January 2001. (An Ace could probably find the page that tells you when exactly Jarve joined.) In fact I believe that like many of the early LD arrivals, there are several accounts for this person. Is that something to do with the early difficulties in using the site and the need to keep getting a new researcher numbers when there were problems with the digibox?
So, there have been LD people on h2g2 for more than 2 years?
I do have one question of my own. It seems that a lot of the LD reserachers live in particular geographical pockets. For example there are quite a few from Scotland, Essex or Liverpool. Does this reflect the users of LD as well? Is it simply to do with the areas that Telewest cover?

Probably a telewest thing....down here in Soton we only get cable & wireless (now NTL).
My mums got telewest back in Liverpool

Well personally i've only had this account since i started using this site since November 2002 so i don't see whether there is a link witht the digibox n creating several accounts.
There are several areas that you can't get access to telewest n they're covered by NTL n other digital providers. I come from the black country in West Midlands n I know the majority of the West Midlands is covered by Telewest. In fact only a mile up the road from me there is a Telewest call centre.
I'm not sure what areas aren't covered by Telewest

coelacanth... Yes... Pencil Queen and yourself are right; it has to do _mainly_ with the areas served by Telewest...
There were also _some_ NTL users accessing the old site from what i remember and of course it was accessible from the Net...
So we even had some american LDers... [A few of the latter are on h2g2 as well...]
But, the majority of the users were Telewest customers..
The "several accounts syndrom" [my words] in the past could have been due to the fact that if too much info was put on their homepage , they could not access it anymore through the digibox... It is now better with the plain skin, but the problem does still exist after a while... For example, at the moment, i would not be able to access my space if i was on a digibox [too many links or something]...
Another reason could be because people tend to click the "remember me" button [the digibox has cookies as well somehow] and then forget to write down their registered name and/or password as they don't think they will need it/them anymore... If for some reasons they log out [or the machine is being replaced with a new one], they can't log in as they have forgotten their login details...
[This happens as well to PC users from what i've noticed...]
But, yes, before the plain skin there were definitely a lot more duplicated accounts...

Diddy..
I think some NTL customers had to pay to access LD, but they couldn'rt access the library... Some others were using a magic email..
But, they were a minority alright..

Hiya Loup!
Thanks for the info perhaps i shouldv'e waited til you posted cus i didn't realise there are people who use the digibox did/do have probs.
With regards to NTL I remember a friend of mine said the only way she could gain access to LD was if she used the TV Internet service. I take it that means the same as the trial that Telewest had last year.
I think they have actually got full internet access through their tv's (well in a sense) so yes you're right that they would have had to pay for the use of LD.
Didn't know about the library bit tho but I know i can always rely on you for VALUABLE info

diddy...
The bit about NTL: I actually learned about it during the relatively short time i used the chat facility on LD... Had a few friends there who were NTLers...
You were right to reply anyway as my posting activities are being very limited these days..[]
I've just noticed your earlier posting about a certain character on LD... They have actually visited h2g2 a while ago, and one of their alter-ego has already crossed keyboard with me on their favorite pet-hates topic...
But, i'd rather keep the juicy details for when i publish my memoirs...
Xian... ><?!... sounds painful...

Do you think if i started a thread up of 'Asylum Seekers' they would come out of the closet?
Is the username in Kow's friends list? That username stood out a mile!
I could actually write a book on what went on in Leisuredistrict!
My girlfriend used chat all the time n some of the stories would make your toes curl!
Seems everyone who used a particular chatroom was 'sharing' each other! Marriages broke up, people started relationships, having babies with each other!
One particular story i will share with you all as I know they don't use this site is one guy was in a secure relationship with a woman well before using this site. He started using the chatrooms n left his partner. His partner got a new boyfriend in the SAME chatroom as the guy who got a new girlfriend. Not long after the guy finished with his girlfriend n started a relationship with either a transvestite/transexual in America! This is all true!
I've many many more stories but i'll save them for another day!
