> The ones which simply say 'Hi ' strike me as very dull.
That was the first use of the tag by a non-Italic - I probably should have put more thought into it...

>> ..because you replaced with Unknown Visitor! <<
And doing so earns full marks for Truth in Advertising as far as I'm concerned. In fact I am inspired to amend my homepage to read Greetings Unknown Visitor, because the TRUTH remains that no one knows who 'visits' unless a message is left by the visitor. And who would leave a message after being frightened, threatened or belittled by a tag?
Uhm ..besides me of course.
Oh dear.. I just realised some may see that as an invitation to view my homepage looking for proof of my stated intentions. Don't bother. I haven't gotten up that much energy to start fooling with GDML tonight. But yes, all visitors are unknown, even the people we know. And I really do intend to let my page reflect that Truth ..someday ..soon. If I can think of anything 'nice' to say to 'them'.

never mind The Truth - i'm too busy pondering Loup's grammar, and whether it is intentional (see the warning!).

i use the tag the way it is intended, and that is to give whoever has bothered to look at your PS or guide entry a more personal experience. if it is misused it is down to the user.

When I first put the tag on my space, I was having a little *too* much fun with it and was told by a friend that it was a very mean use of it...
So I changed some things to make it less *intimidating*.
I figured it was ok, until someone told me just a few days ago that my space is very intimidating, still.
*sigh*

I'm just curious: does anyone know of any "official" reason for the existence of the tag?
(don't bother checking: my space is, I'm sure, very intimidating. That's because I'm generally grumpy, so I thought I should be honest)

I personally find the more intimidating uses of the tag tend to be the more imaginitive ones, and they amuse me. All in all though, I have my doubts about the tag.

Ictoan:
That has got to be the cruelest use of the viewer tag I've ever experienced! Mean, Mean, Mean!!!
(I thought I better actually give you an outburst so that the tag could refer to something)

I guess I can see newbies being kinda freaked about it...
And if you say something downright nasty and mean like "Go away !!! I don't want you or your kind hanging around my space!"
Or perhaps something along the lines of "I *know* you're looking at my space , and since it's my *personal* space, I want you to know that I feel my privacy has been violated. I've notified the authorities about you. Expect them to knock on your door within the next 30 seconds. There is no escape for "
Now *those* would be cruel uses of the tag...
