Goshos Post earlier:
"do you tell your mother that you can't afford to look after her any more and put her out on the streets? Do you tell your handicapped son that you can't afford his care"
I bet Dubya does NOT have to tell His mother that!
This administration's policies certainly promote that for others
They just came out with a study: more $$ funding will NOT bring better care ! They just approved a price raise for Generic Medicines. The pharmacies make there profits from these, especially the large chains.
It is difficult to get home care help this forces many into nursing homes The government is suppose to help protect people whom cannot protect and care for themselves or cannot speak for themselves.

speaking of pharmaceuticals (you sort of were). Did you hear that somebody (nobody will admit to it) tacked a bit onto the Homeland Security bill making it illegal to sue the manufacturers of vaccines for nasty side-effects of those vaccines? I heard that.

They absolutely do not do that.
They operate on prisoners, though... because an ammendment to the Constitution gives them priority over other patients. I saw it on tv, I did.
My parents have suffered countless trials over health insurance. My mother has eight or nine doctors and twice as many prescriptions. Big problems, lots of tears and headaches. "You can only go to the doctors we list under POOPYDOOPY Insurance".
And with insurance, you must cough up a $15 co-pay for every single office visit. Some co-pays vary.
I had to pay $50 co-pay for emergency care one day when I was NOT enjoying a bloody nose that wasn't stopping after 800 lines of the Odyssey(or an hour plus...). My primary care doctor couldn't get me in, and I'd been suffering from bloody noses for about a week then.
Well, the solution was quite simple; it was nothing major. I insisted on not washing my face and hands because doctors in previous years never seemed to take me seriously about my bloody noses.
Anyrot... that may just be a doctor issue. ::shrugs::

Homeland Security... do you think it really works!??
It may sound naive, but I've said it in public and I'll still say it, even with a healthy dose of skepticism: I am extremely surprised that the U.S. hasn't been again attacked since 9/11.
The sad thing is, we all know history is doomed to repeat itself in some form.

"800 lines of the Odyssey"
In Greek or translation?
Just so you know, we have publicly funded health care up here, and people still complain. We don't have to pay for it from our pocket and we can go to any doctor we want, but people still complain. Mostly the ordinary people complain that not enough money goes into it and the politicians complain that too much does. Go figure.

P. S. want me to tell you how the Odyssey ends?

The equasion of socialised medicine with communism in the US never ceases to amaze me. Even the description of New Deal Democasy as the beginning of the end is such an amazing case of ignoring every other Social experiment or success outside of the USA.
What will it take? HMOs are a joke. The only advances are profitable ones. Did you know that HIV research has slowed because companies are worried that Third World countries might insist on subsidised medicine for them? What kind of world are we making?

I knew they did that with the vacine. Many *evil doings* happen by tacking something extreme, unpopular and off topic to existing bills.
Today on an unrelated item, they gave a bunch of corporate tax breaks away. One was for desiel fuel companies.
Do I think National Security works? NOT so far.
I think all the money is going for the New World Order and the Religious Right programs. Re-election of Dubya through corporate TAX gifts.

::giggles:: It was an excellent English translation (I'm a , but not THAT
y), and it was something like the third time I've read it.
Thanks for the offer regarding the ending, though!!! There's actually a longer ending, in which Odysseus travels far from Ithica to ask forgiveness/praise Poseidon(remember that Odysseus blinded the Cyclops, a son of the great sea god!!!??), and that Odysseus dies after he does this... I think I remember the professor saying something about "asking for forgiveness from Poseidon" being earlier in the text.
Bush can learn something from Homer: Achilles' anger in THE ILIAD led to great sorrow, Odysseus' journey home was delayed because of his excessive pride... herrrmmm....

Jeez, zoomer, what's with your spelling? Get your fingers on the right keys. What, are you Gordon Campbell in Hawaii?
(for those who aren't up on current events, Gordon Campbell is a relatively important elected official who recently ran afoul of Hawaiian traffic law having to do with foreign substances in the bloodstream.)

"Walk with a ship's oar on your shoulder until you reach a land in which the men ask why you are carrying a winnowing blade."
Nikos Kazantzakas also wrote an exceptionally long sequel in modern Greek that picks up in Book 22, I think it is.
Which translation?

When I asked if you'd rather live in a first world nation or under communist oppression, I was referring to the Korean War, where the United States stepped into to defend the Republic of Korea from the People's Republic of Korea. I guess the same thing goes for Vietnam, but we failed there.

Here's a link to a well-argued article of Bill Moyers' regarding patriotism and displaying the U.S. flag. Please enjoy.
