If Pastey's posting is merely a petty hate, I think that we can surmise that Pastey is well hard.

Pastey, where on Orkney were you? I've been there several times and most of the hills were fairly gentle. I know, that doesn't mean that the tracks won't ice over. I'm just curious as where you were staying. Did you see the Kirkwall Ba' on Christmas Day? I'd love to see that, but the weather up there is a bit too wet and wild for my liking at this time of year.

I was staying just outside Finstown. The hill itself isn't that steep, but the track down the hill was very icy, and to road to the track wasn't gritted at all, so was solid sheet ice.

Didn't see the game, we were iced in almost all the stay.

PH A particular type of tetrapak carton which has a square top that traps the last bit of liquid inside, so that you have to really go to town on the carton to give up that last dribble. Who designs this rubbish?

You can call me TC

We've had this before. I don't open them. I cut the corner off, (not entirely, or there's a bit of triangular cardboard somewhere in the kitchen that usually gets lost). Then I upturn the pack and decant the contents ALL into a jug, cutting a hole in the bottom of the pack as I pour, to ensure unspluttery transfer of contents.

Then I chuck the pack away.

Advantages:

- I have got ALL the contents out of the pack, even that last bit in the corner, because it's the corner that I have cut off.
- The liquid doesn't lurch out of the silly little hole and go all over the table; I can control the pouring much more accurately
- I can see how much of the juice/milk/water I have left because it's visible in the jug.
- it is less likely to tip over
- it looks nicer on the table.
- And anyway, I can never get that cap to go back on straight. Drives me mad.

Disadvantages:

- I'm (presumably) paying more for a screw-top which I am not using, but then again, I'm getting at least 1 ml more out of my litre tetrapack
- if I can't find a nice square, fridge-shelf-sized jug, I can't put it in the fridge

Today's PH - TV dramas shown in 2 parts on different evenings of the week.

Inevitably I'm in one evening & out the other. That means having to record the episode - then struggle to find time to watch it before the next 2 parter starts. I usually end up not bothering.

Ah, but there IS an advantage if the wind is blowing in the right direction.

If it is an ITV thing, you can whiz past the ads and then for a 60 programme you only have to find 45 minutes to watch it.

And THAT'S worth a PH.

I have Freesat and therefore access to about 190 TV channels.

And what do I watch? BBC1, BBC2 and possibly 3 and 4.

Recently, I watched a 2 part - 2 night ITV drama which was all but un-watchable because of the ad breaks.

I suspect that I have mentioned this before, but I'm old enough to have forgotten that I had mentioned it and I just know that everyone here is too polite to find my post and refer to it.

(Waiting).

Talking of television petty hates, BBC natural history documentaries where the cameraman is the main subject of the programme. This has been done on a number occasions, the latest being 'Snow Wolf Family and Me' with camerman Gordon Buchanan. The documentary is fascinating, not because of Buchanan has been made the star of the show, but because of the wolves.
