Mr. Dreadful - But really I'm not actually your friend, but I am... Posted Feb 15, 2008
O! Sorry, didn't realise that was how people may have been interpreting my post about the naturalness of discarded cigarette butts.
I mentioned it purely to point out that it will eventually break down of it's own accord... I don't condone just chucking the butts on the ground unless there really isn't any other option (e.g. I'm waiting for the bus and there are no bins close enough to would allow me to dispose of the butt properly and not miss it)

Maybe I should get one of those seal-able tube things what you can put spent butts in until such times as you are able to find a bin.

@ his post about Pedantry I meant. The butt tube is a gr8 idea. Thumbs up to that.

TB: for some reason, I am reminded of this:

More petty hates from me - people who can't be bothered to tell me whether they're coming on Sunday, so I can plan the food for the party

Ooh, I hate that too... I love my weekend lie ins, but quite regularly find myself wide awake at 7am on Sunday for absolutely no reason.

Most annoying not being able to snooze a few extra hours in bed.
Curse thee body clock!
The Grumpy Old Men and Woman series...Stop with it, I've had enough.
(Oh please, don't tell me that we are involved in a similar net based whingeathon)

(Yes, we are )
I like Grumpy Old Men, mostly because I agreed with most of what they said, but I found Grumpy Old Women to be utterly cringeworthy.

>Calling actions, behaviors, and inanimate objects "gay".<
~*~Excellent, someone bit already. Which part don't you like? The fact that it's logically incorrect, or do you interpret it as a term of approval or disapproval of said inanimate object?~*~
To clarify, I've only ever heard it used in a deragatory fashion. What I don't like about it is that it's logically incorrect, and that it doesn't really /mean/ anything.

Down here it is evolving into a exclamation of incredulity (at times): 'Oh' look, look at that how gay is that then?' Or when looking at something funny: " That's gay...like...totally.'
My niece chortles at this and uses the word all the time and she and here girlfriend find nothing derogatory about it and being Gay one would think they might be the first to take any offence.
Back on thread: Grumpy old men. Yep I nod my head at a lot of the content it is certainly not specific to the UK but after(how many series?) a while it grows a bit thin and boring.
Have to agree that the Womens episodes are hard to watch. I wonder if any of the female contributers here feel the same though? Perhaps it's the men's episodes they can't stomach?

Hubby and I fall into the 'Grumpy Old' age bracket, although we don't think of ourselves as middle-aged, never mind old. Hubby finds himself agreeing with a lot of what the 'Grumpy Old Women' say, except for the woman-specific bits (obviously). I find myself agreeing with a lot of what the 'Grumpy Old Men' say. So I guess we're both 'Grumpy Old People'.
I do agree that they're starting to scrape the bottom of the barrel with these series, though.

Petty hate: the assumption that just because somebody is something they *must* take offence at anything that makes fun of it.

I keep thinking of the Private Eye term "plug masquerading as news item" when I'm watching the BBC. This morning they had an item about their lookalike/soundalike Saturday evening show and asked the question "Can tribute bands and performers ever be as good as the real thing?" Absolutely piss piss piss poor BBC. Maybe "Should Graham Norton not be on national television?" would have been a better question.

This is one with my profession: I get asked a lot if I'm the photographer for a newspaper at games and events. What gets me is that, particularly sports, I'm on the field - which you can't unless you have a press pass - and wearing a fairly heavy camera around my neck. I've been tempted to say "No, I'm not. I just like standing here and nearly getting run over by football players (both sports that use that term ), or nearly beaned by foul balls."

All variations of the question
"How are you?"
"Oh, I'm fine."
No one actually cares what the answer is, so why the hell do they ask???!!!

"plug masquerading as news item"
Yes that is annoying .
Breakfast news the other morning presented an item on using healing crystals on hamsters and dowsing a dog to see where it was ill . It was described as 'alternative therapy' . The following morning they had an item on exorsism
. What has happened to the ethos of Lord Reith ? Why was this presented as a normal and rational way to think/behave ?

>>Petty hate: the assumption that just because somebody is something they *must* take offence at anything that makes fun of it.<<
And going further: the assumption that use of a potentially offensive term is automatically offensive, regardless of context.
For example, a local council official was lambasted for making this comment:
"In the light of this assessment they now join the ranks of those who believe that the Earth is flat, that the holocaust never happened and those who dress as Pirates to worship of the Flying Spaghetti Monster and His Noodly Appendages."
http://www.bridgwatermercury.co.uk/mostpopular.var.2042074.0.mp_incensed_at_holocaust_comments.php
By just mentioning holocaust deniers he is apparently insulting the memory of those who died
