Eeep, so much backlog! Am I responsible for #109? What was that one about? smiley - run

I think that to discuss the top 10 films, why not do it in the h2g2 Film Society at A270695? smiley - biggrin

Mister Matty

*apologies to fords but...*

Here's some of my favourite films smiley - smiley

Withnail and I
Ed Wood
Blade Runner
Leon
Gladiator
Spartacus
Pulp Fiction
2001 smiley - winkeye

All except 2001 listed on my personal space, not that anyone visits it...... smiley - cry

Talking of Kubrick, has anyone seen Paths of Glory? Man, that is a good film. I love Kirk Douglas's speech to the cynical French general. It nearly had me leaping up and punching the air (and I only watched the film on daytime telly because I knew it was Kubrick).

There *weren't* any flying paper plates in Plan 9 - only in "Ed Wood"... For the real Plan 9, they bought a couple of "Flying Saucer" model kits from the local store, which actually looked surprisingly good on-screen. smiley - ufo

Oops- I'll have to watch it again, more closely. (Haven't even seen "Ed Wood" yet, much to my chagrin. DVD is coming soon...)
Could've sworn those saucers looked like flying paper plates, but I've been wrong before. Sorry. smiley - smiley

It seems to be amazing what you can do with random bits of rubbish; look at Terry Gillingham's random bits in the Flying Circus!

Paths of Glory is a fantastic anti-war film, definitely one of my favourites.

Um, yeah, I was indeed responsible for posting #109, I quoted a line from FMJ but I must have offended someone....smiley - yikes

Has anyone metioned 'Spartacus' yet? That was an early Kubric.

on another note. saw 2010 today. Confirmed my earlier memories that it's not a patch on 2001 but alright-ish.

I dunno I'd be interested to see 'em - but they wouldn't, couldn't top Kubrick's original. 2010 today sounded dated (especialy with the Helen Mirran playing a Russian - wtf? - opp. Roy Schieders Heywood Floyd to the backdrop of political constinations between cold war enemies. It lacked the whole subtexts that bouy up 2001's occasioanlly monotonous proceedings. it made it more just a movie - which is not to raise 2001 above it's place. But 2010 just sort of had it's cards and played em - nothign more:
good guy and bad guys unite to find out what sent Hal cock-a-loop and nearly get blown up ni the process -whoo. smiley - yawn

Plus they altered the message. smiley - grr

All these worlds are yours
Except Europa
Attempt no landing there.

Use them together
Use them in Peace.

Just to unti this with the other thred form moment - this is something the relly smiley - fishs* me off is this 'revisionist' notion in some film adaptations.

Those last two fragments are clearly an addition to gel with the post-cold war theme they were set against. It is however entirely meaningless in context to the story proper and shifts the emphasis (which is the unforgiveable bit in my opinion) to the idea that the Monoliths were doing us some sort of favour (guiding us to political harmony) when their presence in the novels is much more ineffable - which was the point of the original message

All these worlds are yours
Except Europa.
Attempt no landings there (WHY? Whatever are they up to???)
