Seen it twice. Still blown away.
Yep, my main gripe was Lothlorien too, and the could have done more with the Barrows, but with the sheer volume of text they had to go on, I think Mr Jackson and co. did a fantastic job. Don't think I can wait till December for the next one! I also think that the casting was spot-on - Sir Ian McKellan was absolutely perfect as Gandalf, as was Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn. And yeah, I wanna go to New Zealand too! Rumour has it they're opening up a theme park so you can go and visit the sets....

Visit Exotic New Zealand!
Now you don't have to die to visit Heaven - it's only $800 (U.S.) away!
Looney, can we stay at your house and camp on the beach?

Your telling me, re-reading it now, and I know I'll get flanned at least but, it is DULL at times, the battle in Two Towers is just so hard going and lacks excitement. Another theings the Eddings do better battles (as well as characters)

What annoys me is the way he wrote about every meal in great depth.

Read an sentence today in Two Towers that made me think Gandalf refers to "Heathan kings" that burnt themselves and family.
Er isn't "heathen" really a concept reserved for where there is an organised religion to mock the old? A certain christian reference!

not necessarily, some modern pagan groups call themselves heathens. Spose it's subjective.
I love the meal descriptions, they always make me want to trough huge loaves of bread and quaff from tankards. glee!

To me, hearing people gripe about Tolkien's writing style is like hearing people complain that the sun is too bright, the birds sing too loundly, and the roses are too fragrant.

NexusSeven Posted Jan 14, 2002
Tolkien's writing style in LotR is largely derived from extremely stylised Medieval and Old English texts, in which tedious description is a huge part of telling a story - scenes where a warrior or a knight girds himself for battle and puts on his armour had a religious (Christian and pagan) significance that is difficult to grasp today. And when the hobbits stuff their faces, that's just their own rustic variation of getting kitted up for a fight.
Anyway, if you think LotR is dull, (well, so do I, but I think it's an intentional conceit by JRRT - as Frodo's journey becomes harder and harder, so does reading the book so the reader's experience mirrors that of the hobbit; that's what it felt like, anyway. ) you should read some Malory. The Morte D'Arthur has unbelievably boring battle scenes.
"And Sir Uriens unhorsed Sir Pellineas, and did passyng well, and there was much marvellyng. And then Sir Pellineas, fynding himself without horse, did unhorse Sir Bors, and did passyng well, and there was much marvellyng. And then Sir Bors..." etc etc etc

Try reading the icelandic sagas. It is just like that Monty Python sketch. Everytime you mention some guys name you get his entire family history.
Lord of the Rings film - triumph or disaster?
peter swoosh Posted Jan 14, 2002
I saw the film in its first day but as a viewer how had not read to book I think that the fil did not stand on it's own. My main problem was the fact it picked in all aspect in the middel when Ganldalf was draged of the bridge. The ending was terribel, it had a well liets just give in because i cnat be bothered to film a prper ending fell to it and all the action was every where because it set out to get a PG any adult how send any one under 12 needs to see the film.

I'm sorry to be negative (honest! ) but posting 216 is *definitely* the worst posting I've ever seen on h2g2!
Sorry Peter S, (honest! ) but it was barely comprehensible. If you're criticising other people's work, it seems only fair to try to do so without *too* many glaring errors in what you write. It's one thing not to pay too much attention to the odd typo, but 216 is just one big typo.
Just my personal reaction, you understand.

hmmm have you seen some of the things 2legs posts spaceman Spiff just a j/k
hmmm well all I can say to the prior post is that hopefully people understand that is not the end of the story and it has to continue on from there in the next film.....now as for people who have not read the book likeing the movie...the reactions I got from the croud that I saw the movie the second time with is most everyone got into it...and most did not seem bothered by it length....the ending got to most peole though...I heard a bunch of ..."you can't just stop there" and "what the" my thought is that is a good thing...it will make those people want to come back to finish the story...we shall see

I've even read a newspaper review that said "it fails to come to a satisfying conclusion". Most of this is due to ignorance, I believe.
Remember Star Wars, when you had to wait 3 years to see if Han Solo was going to come back to life? We only have to wait 1 year for the two towers.
