Tigers of the Snow by Jonathan Neale. It looks at Himalayan mountain climbing from the point of view of the Sherpas, people whose part in the successful attempts on the various peaks has seldom been considered in all the other books on the subject. It's a real eye-opener.

I'm actually embarrassed to admit this; I've deviated from my usual real authors (Wilde/Orwell/Plath/Adams and so on) and am reading "Rock Bottom: Dark Moments in Music Babylon" by über-gruppie Pamela Des Barres! Don't look at me like that.
To balance it out I'm also (re)reading Tennessee Williams' "The Glass Menagerie" though.

that's what the book says, female spacial awareness isn't always up to much but there are exceptions, but pretty much all women have the left/right problem.
The next on my list will be Return of the King, but after that it's Kavalier and Clay, and then I have a hankering to read the Far Pavillions again.
And I think Janet Evanovich has the latest in the Stephanie Plum series out any day now. So that's coming up soon too.

I've just finished the very fine Foe by JM Coetzee. Next up I've got a choice of 'Noughts and Crosses' by Marjorie Blackman or 'Are You Dave Gorman?' I'm leaning toward the latter at the moment because I've got to read 'Written on the Body' by Jeanette Winterson for Uni in a fortnight.

Atchly, I cannot read maps at all! And I am otherwise 'directionally challenged' (new PC term) in that I often get totally turned around after walking into a building - coming out again I go 'where the heckity am I?' Is this a female thing? I rather don't think so. Still, when I show friends a street map of where I live (when they come to visit) even though I have lived here for ten years and know exactly how to get around all of the winding streets, it takes me ages to find places on the map!
Hmmmm. . .
