I was thinking of exactly that bit before you said it, Sho.

It really is the most powerful image, for me. I've seen bits of the b/w film - does anyone know if that part is in it. I read the novel, in English, many years ago and nothing stuck out for me, really, except the big thing that it's about. Last year I read it in German and much more of it struck me, the desparation, the sadness etc etc. And that bit.
I may have to read it again.

My impressions of the story are along the same lines as Sho's - the hero's sadness and desperation (for a variety of reasons) over no longer being what he was.
I haven't finshed that book, BTW, just the first story. There are four or five more stories to be read. I'll let you know what I think of them.

OK, I've read the next two stories in the collection. The Great Wall of China is fairly straightforward and I can understand and relate to what he says. I'm not sure what to make of Investigations of a Dog, though.

Finished reading the Chinese flautist Guo Yue's memoir (with recipes) "Music, Food & Love". Now I've an urge for some good Chinese home-cooking.
Now reading, Guy Deutscher's "The Unfolding of Language", a fascinating read about how languages develop and change over generations.

Edward the Bonobo - Gone. Posted Jun 2, 2008
Kafka:
Walking around Prague with an erudite and lovely Italian fellow conference delegate. He'd already stopped dead at the door of the Castle and said,
'This is the door! This is where the guards wouldn't let him in! It's *exactly* like in the book.'
Anyway...there we were...lovely summer's evening...strolling around, looking at lovely buildings, lovely women. He turns to me with a look of (if this is a word) enskancement:
'Why was Kafka depressed?'
It's become something of a catchphrase.

Ooh! Ooh! Sound's like one for me!
Let me recommend once again 'A Mouthful of Air: A book about languages, mostly English' by Anthony Burgess

That's the highbrow stuff covered. And now for something completely different...
Kitty and the Midnight Hour - a 'teen fiction' book about a twenty-something radio-presenter werewolf. Better than you'd think.
Kitty goes to Washington (?) - a sequel to above. Also better than you'd think.
Gotham by Gaslight - A comic about some Victorian fella takin' down Jack the Ripper. You'll never guess who it was. (Jack the Ripper that is - Batman's a bit obvious from the first page ).
Currently reading a borrowed proof copy of The Red Wolf Conspiracy. Very very good. So good in fact, I've ordered a hardback copy of the book for myself.
Next up is a copy of Richard Morgan's first attempt at Fantasy. Can't remember what that's called though.

I checked that old book on composers. The two that hadn't died at the time the book was published were Verdi and Gounod. Verdi died January 27, 1901; Gounod died October 18th, 1893. So the book was published before October 1893.
