Someone else who actually knows about Gong!
Strewth, the world will be full of flying teapots soon, sorry, it's an "In" joke.
I remember seeig Steve Hillage many years ago at a free concert in Hyde Park, playing not totally differant music to Gong, who he used to be in.

Actually Gong weren't a bad band, a little off the wall for todays taste perhaps, but cerainly musically quite competant musicians.
I have 3 albums at least, 2 cassetts can't remember name of and Camembert Electric(sp?) in the blackish album cover on vinyle.

Jamiroquai - 'Synkronized', specifically the booty-grabbing, foot-tapping, 'arg, I can't sit still'-inducing 'Canned Heat'.

Jane's Addiction - 'Ritual De Lo Habitual'.
I know Dave Navarro's a pillock but the chap knows what he's doing with a guitar or five, a delay pedal and a minor pentatonic.

I just watched Neil Peart's drum solo on the 'Rush - R30' DVD again.
'Cripes' doesn't do it justice. 'Crivvens' doesn't come close. 'Cor blimey guvnor' is a mere ant at the foot of the sequoia of the phrase that would be needed to describe the brilliance of that chap's drumming.

'crivvens' indeed to Mr Peart.

Still watching the DVD.
Speaking of drummers, Mr Cobham is playing at WOMAD! One of the most musically stunning moments of my life was the first time I heard The Mahavishnu Orchestra's 'Vital Transformation'. Four bars of 'No Mr Cobham, that's not possible.' followed by four bars of 'Oh, you decided to add something on top. STOP IT!.' And all in 9/8.
Even though I'm a guitarist I think that the instrumentalists that most regularly astound me are drummers. Despite all the jokes a decent drummer is a joy to behold.

Although the Mahavishnu Orchestra were good, I have a couple of their cassettes, even better is a vinyle LP I have in my mucky paws at this very moment, although unable to play it.
It is Mahavishnu John McLaughlin and Carlos Santana's "Love, Devotion, Surrender".
There is some great duelling lead guitar on it, although I could do without all that mystical east stuff which put people of a bit in 1973.
A very underrated LP indeed if I remember correctly, although haven't heard it for at least 20 years. It has Billy Cobham and Jan Hammer on drums.

I am, to say the least, intrigued.
I saw John McGlaughlin (sp?) at WOMAD a few years back, getting all mystical. It's not the sort of thing I'd listen to at home but in the sun with a beer in a big field it's exactly what I want to hear.
I got a WOMAD ticket for this year because Peter Gabriel's playing and, apart from Billy Cobham, I don't think I know anyone else that's playing, but that doesn't matter. There's something about sunshine and wor;d music that works.

Well if you ever get a chance to hear "Love , Devotion, Surrender",
perhaps on line, it is worth it.
.
There are only 4 tracks,
Side 1 is: A Love Supreme, Naima and The Life Divine.
Side 2 is only two tracks called Let Us Go Into The House Of The Lord and Meditation.

I've found it 'somewhere' . Might take a while to download though.
I'm currently watching great programme on BBC1 with Frank Skinner trying to learn to play banjo. As one who owns a banjo I can fully appreciate what he's going through and am impressed by his achievement!
Banjo's are hard work!

Fools Gold - Stone Roses
Roy, there are only a few names I recognise on the womad line up and a number of those I certainly want to see. Of the other I don'trecognise, I'm sure there are many gems to be found over that weekend. And what joy, it's not going to be at the rivermead centre in Reading, I hope the new venue is much better (can't really be hard now can it).
