Ok, I've done one already but I have loads more. Can't name just one so here are a few. You lucky lucky people get to plough through them allsmiley - biggrin:

Hannibal by Thomas Harris. The ending was pretty appaling, the film's was worse.
The Silence of The Lambs by Thomas Harris. Haven't seen the film yet, believe it or not.
Red Dragon by Thomas Harris. Was there a film smiley - huh
King Rat by James Clavell. Incredible, best POW camp type story ever!
Notes From a Big Country by Bill Bryson. The funniest man alive.
Bill Bryson Down Under by Bill Bryson of course! Loaded with fascinating information and the quick, dry wit one would expect off him.
The Client by John Grisham. Interesting story-line.
The Hitch-hikers Guide to the Galaxy by D.N.A. It's soo funny!

If you like any of the above too, especially anything by Thomas Harris, then please leave me a message on my area/space thing.
Well that's all for the moment smiley - smiley!

Jon Quixote: steaming little purple buns for tea.

I feel Herbert follows a pattern. I've read about nine of his books and I feel as though he has a machine that takes one book and randomly generates different characters. I still thought they were good though or I wouldn't have read so many.

There is a film of Red Dragon called "Manhunter." It was made before Silence of the Lambs (which I personally think is a fantastic film.) It's not that standout a film even though it was directed by Michael Mann (Heat/Ali) They are supposedly going to film it again with Anthony Hopkins in it. I've heard rumours that they were going to get Edward Norton to play the lead.

But back to books. I'm reading four currently.

Girl, interrupted (Susanna Kaysen)- True life diaries from inside a mental home. Touching, funny, profound but also quite upsetting. Great in every respect (good film too.)

The Hobbit (JRR Tolkien) - I'm finding this slightly disapointing after having just finished all of LOTR. This may just be because the childrens tale writing style doesn't match up to the powerful prose of it's follow-up.

All In the Mind (A farewell to God) (Ludovic Kennedy) - A non fiction book about religion and atheism through the ages. Some of the history is fascinating, and the philosophy is quite deep. However this is also possibly one of the most disturbing books I have ever read because it describes the Inquisitions and Crusades in horrific detail.

Transmetropolitan Series (Warren Ellis) - Set of Graphic Novels. I've just finished the 5th one "lonely city." It's a dark satire set in a dystopian future where the only hope of morality comes in the form of a vigilante journalist with severe drug/sex/violence/god-know's-what-else problems called Spider Jerusalem. Very funny but also extremely nasty at parts.

I tried reading the Bible a while back. It has some fantastic setpieces and a really good sense of the ominous but I found overall it is a bit inconsistant, not entirely orginal and is too vague in the interesting bits with too much incidental detail about "who begat who in the pointless in-between sections.

I much prefered Lord of the Rings, myself.
