Apparently, the BBC aren't happy with the idea of mailshots - which is why the editors have had to break the promise they made pre-BBC that they'd email people once they were up and runnning again.
Appropriate kudos to the team. It's good to have the occasional step forwards to go with all the backwards ones...

That's not really true. The BBC has no problem with the idea of mailshots (at least, we were given permission to do one as soon as we asked about it a year ago, once we'd explained that it wasn't spam mail), it's just that it was taking so long for the mailshot itself to be processed that we effectively gave up on it... but it's nothing to do with an anti-mailshot policy, because there isn't one!
We might get round to trying to process a mailshot again, but no promises.

The Beeb obviously aren't anti-mailshot - you can subscribe to receive a BBCi 'newsletter' every week.

They are, however, anti-spam, and we did have to explain that we weren't spamming anyone, just informing those who'd registered of a change in the service, so perhaps that's where the confusion lies. Whatever, the reason it didn't happen was because the mailshot never got sent out, not because we didn't ask, and not because we weren't allowed to do it...
