It is extremely unlikely that offsite pictures could be reinstated due to abuse and copyright issues. However, I think there's cause for more - Congrats on another great collaborative entry, everyone!

Offsite pictures will NEVER be reinstated, and to be honest it's something I approve of. They shouldn't be reinstated, because of copyright partly, but also because it's just not very nice for the people who host those pictures to have loads of bandwidth used just to show a picture on h2g2. I know many people had their own webspace accounts for such pictures, but some didn't.
Best to have hosting within h2g2 itself.

Re: uploading pictures. We hear you, and we're looking into the cost of server space per user (etc) so we can work out how to implement user-uploading of images. It's something we definitely want to do.
Re: reactive moderation. We're in active dialogue about this sort of thing with the policy units. Don't think we're avoiding the issue!

Glad Shazz saw it anyway!
The link was fine, and I got to it, from here, as an identity not registered with Yahoo.
The apparently 'broken' link is really the web acting very clunky today, doing all sorts of wonky stuff and very slowly. Status bar keeps saying 'done' before things load, the 'internet' icon keeps getting replaced with 'unknown region' and my firewall and virus scans are flashing madly. There are 'poxy servers' everwhere!
Like I said, the link was fine and probably should not have been removed after only one try on a bad day. "If at first you dont suck seed, never try skydiving".
My general joy that URLs have returned will not allow me to grumble or get cranky over this loss of having you witness my 'epiphany', nor shall I besmurch this happy occassion by hurling phrases like 'trigger-happy moderator', but rather I shall be content and thankful for the larger small mercies.
peace
jwf

In this game, you only get one shot. C'est la vie.

"Couldn't you persuade Jim to write a script to recover pre-BBC URLs which were moderated out of the backlog...?"
Assuming the original text still exists, you'd still have to go through each post that was moderated for URL content and check the links by hand, so it's not a trivial exercise.
However, were we to get reactive moderation (i.e. things only get moderated if complained about) then that might be an option.
