A Conversation for Talking Point: What Are you Scared Of?
Well, I'm afraid of...
Shea the Sarcastic Posted Aug 10, 2001
I don't know about that Amy ... I have an intense fear of heights, and my father told me that as a baby I would scream if he tried to put me on his shoulders, where would that have come from?
I use to have an intense fear of needles. We went to get a measles vaccination once, and I carried on so much that the doctor said he wouldn't give me the injection. My mother sat on me while he did it!
But one time, the doctor stuck a thermometer in my mouth, and when I was distracted with that, he injected me. I didn't know he was going to do it, and after that time, I realized that it didn't really hurt. Now I don't have the panicky fear anymore. I still can't look, but I can sit while they do it.

Dunno. Just something I remembered from Psych class, but then I wasn't more than 50% concious during that class, so who knows...

No, right after lunch... and it was an hour long...

You have to be careful of those after-lunch classes. Your body's too busy digesting to be able to give much energy to the thinking process!

I don't mean to brag, but I have no fear of spiders, although I do fear needles just a little, but manage to cover it up with a cozy facade. I would like to say that my biggest fear is right-wing extremists, but really it is simple rejection. I think this is known as yousuckophobia in the psychology discourse, but it terrifies me greatly none the less. A little post script: Please to not respond negatively to my post or I shall feel very down, and have to start drinking again.

Actually, it was my measles vaccination which started me off on my fear of injections. I didn't like them before then, but I was able to go in, sit down and have it without any problems. The trouble is, that it felt like someone grinding a biro point against my arm bone.
Now, I don't really worry about the pain, but for some reason because of that I've suddenly become petrified of the concept. Silly, isn't it?

I don't like needles either...
...basically because I was very ill pretty frequently as a child, so ill I couldn't eat or drink anything - and I usually ended up in the hospital, being so dried up that they had difficulties finding my veins, meaning they had to try several times before they succeeded... (drip>
...and then I started this campaign at w*rk to donate blood, and discovered that I can't donate blood because of my allergy...
...but I can donate plasma, and it was OK the first and second time I did that, but then, the third time, the usual nurse was on holiday...
...so the nurse on duty didn't manage to find any vein, and then another nurse took over, asking if it was OK to make a second attempt - but I hadn't realized that the first needle would be left in my arm meanwhile... ...in the same arm she would try to get a needle into again...
...so I had to tell her to lower the seat I was resting on - at first she looked a bit surprised, but did what I asked - and then, on seeing me go pale as a piece of paper said: Thanks for telling me in time!

My fears are many....normal things like heights and large open spaces and s...and more unusual (?) things like clowns *shudder* and being alone...even for a short time. Maybe I'm just being , but that's they way I am .

Fred Smith Posted Aug 12, 2001
I was afraid of rejection at one stage because things were not going well for me at school with friends, but recently I've realised that whatever happens I will still have friends somewhere. And in my case I'm only in school for a few more months and then it doesn't matter what my old school friends think of me.
My biggest fear is Dogs, I find it difficult to go within 4 yards of them and I find myself freezing up when I hear them bark. I'm also afraid of Roller Coasters because I went on a very large one with some of my friends. It was a hellish experience for me and I haven't been able to go on a roller-coaster since.

I used to be afraid of dogs, too. I don't remember how I got over that one.
And I never was really afraid of roller coasters. Ok, that's a partial lie. I never go on a thrill one if I'm alone. I wonder if there's such a thing as fear of riding a roller coaster alone?

I've got a number of rather large scars from fighting with my dog. She's ripped the back of my hand open and taken a lump out of my arm, as well as dotting my arms with lots of little white puncture scars. I guess it's just because I'm so tasty...

And I've always found rollercoasters to be quite tame, and quite relaxing at times. You just sit back and let the dynamic G-forces ease the day's tension out of your muscles and drift away as the wind billows through your hair. It's nice.

Dentists, oh Dentists. It isn't a pain thing, it is - I think - an abject terror of someone else being in total control (and having sharp impliments in my mouth). Sitting in the chair turns me (quite truthfully) into a whimpering wreck, a fact which the guys I used to play rugby with found perpetually amusing. I can't even watch scenes of a dental surgery on TV. I have no idea why it is so.
Fortunately my current dentist is very understanding, and schedules my appointments so that there are 2 nurses available - one who just sits and holds my hand. (Truly).
Clowns are EVIL and must be watched, and snakes give me the creeps.
Other than that, I'm fine.

Oh yes, I'm also afraid of earwigs. That came about when, during a GCSE maths lesson (that'd be four years ago), lots of earwigs came in the window of the classroom and decided to attack me and my friend, who were nearest. My friend immediately began a mass earwig slaughter with his maths book (drawing some attention from the teacher, who found it rather amusing), but as I was closer to the window I had to deal with the earwigs crawling up my trousers.
Dentists don't scare me, unless I think they're about to give me an injection or drill something or something horrid like that.
Orthodontists frighten me, because when they take impressions I'm always petrified that I'll inhale some of the gunk and choke to death.

Earwigs! How could I forget my fear of earwigs?! I can't even get myself to squish them! I've had a fear of them since I was a child. I'm fine with every other kind of insect. The worse thing that happened to me, was on a weekend to a "resort" in the mountains. There were cabins, and each cabin had 4 units with 4 beds in them. Would you believe that my bed had a colony of earwigs in it? I still get the creeps just thinking about it!
