There was a migrant ship called Marquis of Bute which sailed to Victoria (Australia) at about that time.

Are we talking about the ship or the actual holder of the title Marquis of Bute?

I looked int the OED to see if there was some (unknown to me) expression with beef, and it said:

US informal: a criminal charge:
getting caught with pot in the sixties was a narco beef

T'was the only thing I could think of.

Well "the leisure" suggests imprisionment to me, as in "at her Majesty's leisure".

My last QI (ad hoc) was - from my point of view as question setter - unsatisfactory. So I've been more patient with this one.
