There is much debate going on about the rape & pillage-legends. Some say it is highly questionable that these atrocities ever took place. Every enemy tell stories like that about their enemies.
Just listen to Bush & bin Laden, for instance...

Very true. It's quite possible the move was more peaceful.
Then again, there's no reason why it wouldn't have happened.
I was interested in the debate on WHy they moved to other places.
Some say it was population boom, some say it was resource shortage, others say it was simply mindless violence. I'm not a subscriber to the last one.

Hmmm, Denmark consists of 500 islands scattered across a lot of sea. Norway and Sweden also have a lot of islands. From the dawn of time (= after the ice-ages) this has motivated the norsemen to build ships. These ships became better and better - until they had every possibility to sail wherever they wanted.
I guess this started it all. People have always been moving around this planet, you know. The grass is always greener and that sort of thing.
