Breakfast on the gods thread
Ragged Dragon Posted Jun 15, 2004
Wake up everyone!
I go away for the weekend and everyone stops posting!
COFFEE for everyone.
FOOD for everyone.
WAKE UP and greet the dawn!
HAIL SUNNA!
Golden one of the morning!
HAIL SUNNA!
White one of the noontide!
HAIL SUNNA!
Red one of the evening!
HAIL SUNNA!
Ever returning light!

Still no one?
Well, this is my last post until after Midsummer, I would think, as I have to wash stuff, buy stuff and pack stuff...
Is there really nothing left to say on the greatest topic in the nine worlds?
Jez
PS Breakfast is in the fridge, ready for tomorrow.

May as well get stuck in then...
If you need a god to give things meaning, where does the god get its meaning from?
Why can't you give things their own meaning? Is intrinsic, Objective value so superior, even if it quite probably doesn't even exist? Why care about pretending to be Objective in the end anyway?
Being without gods doesn't automatically make someone a nihilist.

I don't see how that follows at all anyhow.
Being without gods simply means one doesn't have gods. Or at least, none that they know about.
I can never dismiss the idea of gods because, quite frankly, how do I know they don't exist?

Hi Cybe. Most people, including many religious ones, find their life's meaning in relation to the wider human society. This may be through closer relationships with family, friends etc; or society/humankind at large via service, research, teaching etc. Indeed, it is part of the Christian tradition that we love one another and support the poor and suffering.
I think that simply to find meaning in life through God without the above is something of a travesty of what is intended. An example might be enclosed orders of monks and nuns. Their beliefs clearly give more than standard emphasis to the eremitic (can't think of a clearer word!) aspects of faith.

Hi az. There's been little to reply to of late. Good to see you too. I might be cut off in me prime on July 6th though. You know why!

i reckon, God: Fact. He's just having a good laugh at us all on the entertainment channel on his TV? and he completely forgot we're all real.

Alji. In fact 'ascetic' is the one I was groping for. Still, 'eremitic' seves well but sounds too pretentious. Roget? Thesaurus.com? I was too lazy to look it up.

Yo Alji. Typically Geminian set of activities I expect. I spent the day reading a solicitor's letter and reacting plus falling foul of the usual vigilantes. Keeps me occupied, but not a whole lot of fun!

Long time no visit. Glad to see the old school looks much the same, same staff, similar pupils etc. Here's one for everybody, them what hasn't seen it on my PS.( Be warned, you may find it a tad cynical...)
16th June is celebrated in Dublin as "Bloomsday", that being the day on which the entire action of James Joyce's "Ulysses" takes place. So here's the joke.
Q.Why is Bloomsday like any church-going Sunday in Ireland?
A. Because it's a day when thousands of people who haven't read the book get together to celebrate a great work of fiction.
On a less flippant note, here's a few words on belief.
Belief Haiku:
There are no demons
other than our beliefs - and
they are all demons.
Cheers, chaps ( I'm off on me hols...)

Hi Jez. Hope you don't mind if I quote without the exclamations. Reverence might be appropriate, but not surprise, for that which is appreciated for its reliability.
